5.0 out of 5 stars Throughly enjoyable 2 disc set chronicling the best of Windy City soul., December 20, 2006

This review is from: Brunswick Top 40 R&B Singles 1966-1975 (Audio CD)
If you were listening to Top 40 radio or collecting records in the decade from 1966 through 1975 you surely will recall the outstanding soul sounds of the Chi-Lites "Have You Seen Her" and "Oh Girl" and the Jackie Wilson hit recordings of "Whispers" and (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher". Tyrone Davis hit the Top 40 in a big way with the tunes "Can I Change My Mind" and "If I Could Turn Back The Hands of Time". And Young-Holt Unlimited had a monster instrumental hit called "Soulful Strut". All of these tunes and dozens more were released in Chicago by Brunswick Records. This was an extremely exciting time in American popular music and the new 2006 release "Brunswick: Top 40 R&B Singles 1966-1975" recalls that incredibly creative period. While Brunswick records was not really a major player in Top 40 radio in those days, it did produce a plethera of tunes that were big hits on the R&B charts.

Having been duly impressed by the major hits produced by Brunswick during these years, I wanted to sample some of the other Brunswick releases from that period. And believe me I was not disappointed. There is certainly lots to like on this 2 CD set. I have played it a number of times now and I really have come to love the Artistic's 1966 hit "I'm Gonna Miss You" and Barbara Acklin's fabulous number "Am I The Same Girl" which was resurrected in the 1990's by Swing Out Sister. There are also terrific tunes by artists I had never really heard before like Otis Leavill and The Lost Generation. One special moment in this collection is the outstanding recording of "For Your Precious Love" by Jackie Wilson and Count Basie. That one is a keeper!

"Brunswick: Top 40 R&B Singles 1966-1975 comes with an interesting 10 page booklet that would have been much more useful if the print was bigger. There is lots of great information on all of these artists but unfortunately you really need a magnifying glass to read it! Too bad! On the plus side, I loved the cover art and I am very pleased to report that the remastering job is absolutely outstanding! This anthology is a real find for a collector like myself and will be a great addition to my music library. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Music, August 3, 2006
This review is from: Brunswick Top 40 R&B Singles 1966-1975 (Audio CD)
I have not heard half of these recordings since my x wife tossed my 45 collection out the window back in the 80's. The fact that a lot of the songs on this collection had not been available on CD up to now really aggravated me for a long time. When I saw this CD at Tower Records, I actually screamed out loud, I got so excited.

Growing up outside of Chicago, I can't tell you how much the Brunswick label meant to me and my brothers in the early 70's. It was the last copy on the shelf, so I naturally grabbed it before someone else did. If you don't know much about Brunswick Records, I can tell you that it is part of R&B royalty. The lush strings and rich horns that draped over artists like Tyrone Davis and The Chi-Lites defined what is now known as Classic Soul.

For two weeks now, I have been playing these CDs every day in my home and car. Some of my favorite songs are "Just Ain't No Love" by Barbara Acklin, "Talking The Teenage Language" by The Lost Generation and "The Funky Chicken" by Willie Henderson. I'm looking forward to getting a copy for each of my brothers, who were even bigger Brunswick fanatics than I was. Needless to say, I'm very glad that I purchased this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eery Recording Blew Me Away!, July 22, 2006
This review is from: Brunswick Top 40 R&B Singles 1966-1975 (Audio CD)
While Motown was the sound of young America, Brunswick was the sound of BLACK America. What amazes me is how well this music has aged with time. After listening to both CDs, I realized that some of today's artists, such as Joss Stone, Paul Wall, Jaheim and Beyonce have all sampled music from this one particular collection to create their own mega hits.

The packaging is superb and has detailed liner notes on every artist. I was also blown away by some of the rare photographs of Nat Tarnopol, Carl Davis, Eugene Record and Jackie Wilson inside the Brunswick Records studio.

As someone who loves classic soul and hip-hop, I can guarantee that this collection won't let anyone down. When I went to the Brunswick website, I realized that they have 150 Billboard charted singles from that era. I just can't for them to make more of their music available. This collection is absolute dynamite!
