I've had smaller, less competent compasses on my kayaks but when I recently bought a Necky Chatham 17 I wanted to fill the space allocated for a compass with a good, reliable brand. I opted for the Brunton 58 and am very pleased that I did.

The unit has a soft bottom that helps it stay in place even when wet. The four bungee-type cords secure the compass to the boat's rigging and enable the user to see it perfectly while paddling.

The coordinates are easy to read in almost any light conditions. It is made well and seems to be sturdy enough to handle all that most kayakers will ever throw at it.

Attaches easily to a kayak with its long elastic cords. Easy to read scale even when placed near the end of a 17' kayak.

This is an excellent compass, fluid dampened, and very clearly visible markings. I was not sure about the attachment method at first, but now I know that for me it was a good choice. I had always thought that the compass should be solid-mounted, but the fact that I use several kayaks, and sometimes when out of town I'll rent one, it makes it easy to transfer with the bungee cord mount. No matter what kind of GPS you have, when the power goes south you still have the trusty compass.

This is a nice little compass. It's just large enough to read (without my glasses)yet small enough to not be an eye sore on the deck. I also liked how nicely it attached to my deck bag, which I occasionly use. Now my wife and I can finally agree what direction were going. Happy Kayaking.

I recently used it on a paddling trip in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and loved it. It was very foggy when we launched and the compass was invaluable for staying on course. Although I had a GPS it is much easier glancing at the compass on the deck of the boat rather than looking down to focus on the small GPS screen(know and study your route before you launch). It is easy to mount, easy to read, well constructed and a great price. I compared the heading with my Garmin GPS and it was spot on. Also, the shipping was very fast. I would not hesitate to buy another one!

Be Safe, Be Prepared and Happy Paddling!!!!

The compass is fine, and the price is good for that. But I am stuck with a compass that I cannot attach to my kayak. Since I need one next week, I wish I had gone for the deck mount (70P) that is twice as expensive.

The very first time I tried to use it on my kayak, one of the hooks broke off when I slightly stretched the shock cord. The shock cord is very tight (strong), the length of the cords fairly short (little stretch), the kayak is narrow at the compass recess area, which leaves very few options for how/where to attach the compass to the kayak so it fits snug. When I stretched one cord to try to fix it just a bit further down, the clip came off and I could not snap it back in place.

These clips consist of 2 parts with a "self locking collar" and snap on hooks. I found them online, look for "quick fit hooks bouncing rabbit" or for shock cord fittings by bouncing rabbit (company name). The parts came apart, and back home I could see that the collar part that holds the shock cord with a knot, was broken. The clips are described as "extremely strong" yet further down the page they say "make a lightweight stretch cord of the exact length you need."

Don't know yet if I am going to return the compass or permanently attach it to my kayak myself. I think that a more flexible cord and some extra clips would have been helpful, along maybe with some instructions or suggestions for how to attach it to your kayak.

Unlike other marine compasses that claim "water resistance" but are not, I would suggest that the Brunton 58 is "waterproof." Simple. well-made, and sturdy. Ron P. - Ohio

Recently purchased and have been satisfied so far. I like the portability of this compass and works fine for general navigation.
