This is the "clipped to your backpack all the time" compass. It glows in the dark and I like taking night hikes that can go longer than expected and turn you around. This glows in the dark hello! Only downside is the needles can be about 20 degrees off sometimes, so taking multiple readings is advisable (always).

Unlike some other compasses that I have used, where the needle bounces around, this one quickly points north, and stays there.

well designed,

It's liquid filled so it orients quickly. The entire plastic base glows in the dark, making the north (black) part of the needle stand out clearly. The center of the base is actually translucent enough to read a map through. My only complaint is that the compass can't lay flat because of keyring, but this isn't really an orienteering compass. For a driving compass (or even short hikes) it works great, and it's as big as possible without making an unwieldy keychain.
