4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but dubious workmanship., September 18, 2009

Decided to give this stove a try after my 20-year-old Coleman finally completely died. The new Colemans seems lightweight and cheap compared to my old one. I have used Brunton compasses for years, they are bombproof; however, this stove is an odd combination of some heavy duty parts (grate, main body, stainless steel drip pan, burners) and some rather cheap pieces (the hinges, clasps, lid, possibly the knobs) combined with some shoddy workmanship. The first one I looked at had knobs that wobbled badly when turned, and it was fresh out of the box. I opted to risk a second one without opening the box, and the knobs turn straight and smooth, but it has a blemish on the lid that will probably rust if I don't paint over it, and one of the hinges is not attached well (and with rivets that will likely loosen over time). After firing it up and boiling some water, the nice circular rings around the burners in the grate became somewhat less circular from the heat. Only an appearance issue, though.

It does function well, the burners crank impressive amounts of heat or simmer very low, and I have had no issues with the piezoelectric lighter. It lights right up on both burners. A drawback with the rubber-cased hose for the gas line is that it will eventually rot and crack. The advantage is that you can place the gas bottle well out of the way, especially on this one because they made the hose plenty long, unlike on my old Coleman. It also seems that this stove will be fairly easy to repair, because it appears to be straightforward to take it apart. Bottom line, I am happy with this stove's functionality and basic design, but somewhat disappointed in the workmanship. I'd recommend sending it back if it has any obvious flaws, maybe they'll get the message eventually.

1.0 out of 5 stars clunker, July 30, 2009

I have never seen such a poor workmanship in a product before. Out of the box this thing won't even open, the lid is stuck in the metal casing, no it was not damaged in shipment since there were no dents or dings. The steel casing is extremely cheap. I am amazed how companies like Brunton expect to stay in business by selling sub-standard products like these.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent camp stove, May 5, 2009

Things started out rocky. One of the burners didn't light with the starter. I found that the spark creator right under that gas outlet was bent and wasn't hitting the flame. I bent it back and it worked. I then took it camping the next weekend. Unfortunately, the starter issues still plagued me. But, I used a lighter to start both burners, and things work very good. It would have been nice to have some kind of carrying case for it, but again, that was remedied by putting in my plastic camping gear box. Overall, it is a very attractive stove and works very good for it's main purpose, cooking. I would have given it five stars except the starter is a minor annoyance. Hopefully others won't have that problem.
p.s. I used the Coleman propane canisters and they worked great.
