Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Making its first U.S. appearance is Sheila Pim's gently witty A Brush with Death (1950), another in Rue Morgue's Vintage Mystery series. Quick-tempered Irish artist Fergus Gandon seeks refuge from a poisoner at his sister's home in Dublin, but he finds only a temporary respite from whoever is trying to kill him.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quaint Irish puzzle, December 31, 2007

Like all of Sheila Pim's mysteries, which I have been tracking down since I read the first one, this is a delightful mystery which can only have been written by an Irishwoman with a keen interest in horticulture which is crucial to the solution of the mystery. I particularly recommend it for those fans who love the genre for its puzzles rather than for gore and mayhem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant reading, April 8, 2010
By

This review is from: A Brush with Death (Rue Morgue Vintage Mysteries) (Paperback)
The Pim Irish mysteries are not a series and each is unrelated to the other. This one is mildy satisfying, not so much for the mystery surrounding the poisoning, but for the observations about the state of Irish society around the time. It concerns an artist so there is an abundance of art-oriented information, a lot of which is interesting. Only gripe is there seemed to be a few too many members of the Guards involved to keep them all straight in my mind.
