This book is an artistic approach to the teachings of zen. Tanahashi also includes his own wit and humor which makes this book a thought-provoker and a real feel good too. It brings up many interesting ideas while explaining his own approach to oneness through art. This book includes many short poems, short thoughts and tons of beautiful paintings. These paintings, each named "mind #", coupled with his thoughtful sayings make for a perfect product. This is one book I read over - atleast once a week, its contents bring peace and humor to my life. I highly recommend it.

The brush as philosophy and art of zen.

I receive many books on the topics of Japanese culture and Buddhism from family member and friends as gifts and this one is so different. On the topic of shodo anyway, it's much shorter than Sacred Calligraphy of the East and more similar to a light poetry book like Rengetsu: Life and Poetry of Lotus Moon. The book is full of thoughtful text and beautiful paintings. I knew I would like it when I came across this poem:

A line is amazing. A person's hand is the person. If you ask ten people to draw a line, how different each will be. Someone's straight line can be very crooked. Another person's line may not look straight, but it is very straight inside.

You can't hide anything in a line. You are there whatever line you draw. And you will stay there, even when you go somewhere else. If you personality is interesting enough, the line will be interesting. To do this, you have to be fearless.

I choose this rating because it is a wise book with beatiful sayings and calligraphies by Kazuaki Tanahashi; The book itself is a piece of art through it's lay out. I would recommand it to everybody involved in spirituallity and art.

This book looks deceptively simple--lots of white space, small nuggets strewn here and there, and reproductions of compelling paintings--but it's truly profound if you let it soak in a bit. You'll want to read it over and over. Kaz is the real deal. You won't regret this.
