Book Description

EVAN AUSTIN, PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR

It couldn't be simpler. All Evan Austin needed to do was find R.J. Gibson before his eighteenth birthday and the kid would inherit a huge trust fund. Everybody would go home happy: R.J. would be set for life, the mom would appease her guilt, and maybe Evan would finally be able to put a tragic case from his past behind him.

But nothing in life is ever that easy. Adding to the confusion are a young woman whose boyfriend liked to slap her around and the murder of an Assistant U.S. District Attorney, for which one of Evan's former clients is now a suspect. Throw in his growing attraction to R.J.'s guardian, artist Roman Cavanaugh, plus the Mariners having another really bad season, and Evan's got a bit more on his plate than he can handle.

Not that it's ever stopped him before.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and surprising read! January 31, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is a lot of fun. The characters are interesting and well described, and the story is exciting. I don't read a lot of mysteries, but this could get me started on them. Evan is so likable, even in his sarcastic moments. I think this would make an excellent film. There is suspense, romance and comedy! All good! The story would appeal to the gay community, but it's not " gay literature". The main character happens to be gay, but that has little to do with the story. It's just a good read for anyone who enjoys adventure, and for Seattle fans it would be a hit, too. Well written, hip, funny and descriptive. I hope to see a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It! April 26, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a good detective story with a sideline m/m romance. Fair warning - no sex in this one but with everything going on I didn't miss it (too much), and still found the burgeoning romance to be very sweet. The main character Evan Austin is wonderful and if the series continues at this level, I will list him as a favorite right next to Adrian English and Victor Bayne. Austin's voice is strong, smart, funny and I actually found him to be a downright loveable guy. The writing was great and the side characters were wonderfully filled in. Since I bring up Adrian and Vic, I have to add that at this point, I find the potential love interest for Austin to be more likeable than Jake or Jacob, although their respective romances in the long run will be hard to beat. My one concern is that I see the publish date is 2009, and as of 2011 as far as I know, there are no other books in the series. I really hope the author keeps going. A lot of potential here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great new gay mystery series January 8, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is the first of a hoped for new gay mystery series. I have read most of the gay mystery series that are out there and I find that this first book compares well with some of the best of these series such as Michael Nava's and John Morgan Wison's series. If the author continues to develop his main character, Evan Austin, as he has put in place in this first book, this series could be as good as Joseph Hansen's novels, whom I consider to be the best gay mystery series writer. I sure hope Scofield can do that as it would be great to have gay oriented books like this available in the midst of all the Gay Romance stuff out there (not that there is anything wrong with that genre). The only real problem I had was that it sometimes was confusing with the number of plot lines taking place and difficult to connect them, although they were being used to set up the next book in the series. I thought the development of the main character was especially good and there were hints of many revelations of his development to come. All in all, I found the book very enjoyable and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read
The setting, Seattle, is well-described. The lead character is clever but so very human and not omnipotent. He relies on his team. He has the ring of reality about him. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great novel
I really loved the book. It was a great mystery filled with action. Great character development. What I can't understand is why he's taking so long to write a sequel.
