bonsai semi-novice,
By Politics Stink "extremedoityourselfer" (Kentucky) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brussel's Hinoki Cypress Bonsai (Lawn & Patio)
The tree came in great condition, healthy and alive. To add on some of the other comments:-Of course it doesn't come looking like a mature, trained bonsai tree. It's a 39 dollar tree!! It won't be trained for that cost!!!!! A fully trained tree takes years and much care to create the illusion of an old, natural tree. I recommend getting a book and reading up a little before buying. For the price, this tree is a bargain!! -As far as I can tell, the styrofoam peanuts are the only way to really protect the tree in transit. Yes, they're a pain to unpack (took 10 minutes) but it's worth protecting the tree. However, if you noticed, they use corn-starch based foam and they dissolve in water. They're not environmentally unfriendly. They're not petro-carbon based polymer. They're perfectly safe and if you don't want to throw them away, pour them in a bucket of water and pour the water on your lawn. It may even have some fertilizing properties.

An outstanding tree and a great buy!,

This tree came in perfect condition. No, it has not been fully "bonsai-ed" yet and is still a little rangy. But I gave it as a gift to someone interested in learning how to shape a bonsai, and she is totally thrilled. The tree was much larger and more mature than I expected. And I bought it in a "gold box" transaction, so the cost was around $30 - incredible price, including free shipping. I'd recommend anyone interested in Bonsai buy thru Amazon!p.s. I must concur with the over-abundance of environmental UNFRIENDLY peanuts that encased the tree. Wouldn't there be some other way to safely ship? I had a heck of a time getting the tree out of the box, and the peanuts into the trash!

This is a nice tree. Yes it does come packed in a thousand styro peanuts, but it is for the safety of the tree. I, too, was fooled into thinking this was an indoor bonsai, but only because it was an impulse buy, and I lamely failed to read the description. For those considering a buy, it's an OUTDOOR tree, it's 12-14" high, and it comes well packaged.

Handsome Specimen,

The specimen shipped needed pruning right away in order to look like the one pictured but the structure of the tree is effective. I began creating bonsai almost 25 years ago and it is harder than most people think due to the daily watering and continual pruning. But for those ready for the commitment this should be a good starter. I would recommend one of any number of books on bonsai care. If this dies under my care it is my responsibility and not a reflection on the seller. Brussel's is a great company to buy from and doing it through my Amazon Prime membership means I paid no shipping. (Be prepared for a mountain of packing peanuts which not only protect the trees well but also insulate during transit.)

I was looking for a "blank canvas" and was pretty nervous ordering online. I ordered this cypress and was blown away with the service. Tree was delivered along with another Juniper two days after ordering and was very healthy and in great shape. Images will be uploaded to show the product as well.
There are a lot of packing peanuts - because you NEED a lot of packing peanuts and they helped deliver it in pristine shape. I strongly recommend this tree, but you should know it is not shaped at all but is rather a truly is a healthy, well packed blank canvas for those that truly want something to work with!

My first mail order Bonsai Tree. My first impressions are that the tree is much larger than I expected. It is about 24" tall and 14" in diameter. It comes packedged well in a big box with a million peanuts. Make sure you unpack this thing somewhere where you can do damage control... you will need to pick peanuts out of the branches for a good 5 minutes. The soil and rocks survived well entact as did the tree. The instructions say you must always keep the tree moist, waterly mostly every day in the fall, summer and spring. This is something I wish I knew before ordering. In summary I think this is a good deal for the money if you take the free shipping. You will have a good entry level bonsai tree, but it will take daily attention, perhaps more then most people are willing to do. Also the size takes this thing beyone a cute little tree to more of a cute little shrub.

good healthy plant; strong; yet remember it's still a bonsai,

needs lots of care. FORGET WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT WATERING FROM THE TOP! The soil is packed too tightly. You must soak the entire pot in a container of water; at least three-quarters of the way up the side of the pot. Also, don't believe that your tree can survive temps down to 20 degrees. I live in central New York State. There be cold winters here! I almost lost my tree to frost bite from a sudden colder than normal snap. If you must bring the tree inside, make sure it is thoroughly watered often - at least every other day. I also almost lost my tree to extreme dryness when I had to keep him inside for over a week. Even if you can leave your tree outside during the winter, IT STILL MUST BE WATERED EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS. DON'T LET IT DRY OUT. DRYNESS IS A BONSAI WORSE ENEMY! However, this is a strong tree. It has even survived the winter of 2003-04!

FALSE ADVERTISING.,
By Sonicroks (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews

This is not an indoor plant, let alone a desk plant, even though my recollection is that it was advertised that way. It also does not look like the cute little manicured plant in the picture. Its branches go every which way, and many are brown. And as the other reviewer says, it comes packaged in a million styrofoam peanuts, which take a half hour to get out and another half hour to get into the trash. This one is going back to my friends at Amazon along with a request that they pay for the shipping.

Live plants from Amazon?!,
By Smitty Peete (Seattle, wa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brussel's Hinoki Cypress Bonsai (Lawn & Patio)
Sure why not. I've purchased plants via catalog for years and it can be frustrating to make the call and then find out that my first three choices are not in stock. Or worse, place the order and find out upon delivery that certain items were out of stock. I like that when purchasing from amazon I know whether or not there is inventory of a particular item before I make the purchase. I haven't pulled the trigger on one of these bonsai's yet, but I'm giving it 5 stars just for the effort. What's next, amazon, livestock?!
