This is a great book for a pet owner,
By Patrolman Paisley (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brussels Griffons (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I already own a Brussels Griffon and I am always interested in reading about them. There are few books on Brussels Griffons available, so I bought this one right away. I found that it is an EXCELLENT book for anyone who is interested in a Brussels Griffon or who owns one. Everything the book says about ownership and the little things you should know are really right on. The Health chapter is excellent because Griffs are generally very healthy but there are things you should know about them that might not be true for other breeds. All the other books you can tell were written by people who don't own the breed. They don't know the little special quirks the way this author does. Her love and caring about the breed comes through. I especially like the Chapter on Grooming because it took me awhile to get into a regular routine of how to groom my buddy, but if I 'd had this book, I would have known. Her advice on how to clear the hair from eyes is very useful. This writer emphasizes training the dog to stand on the grooming table and get used to being brushed, which is a good idea because that is the hardest part. All it takes is a little time to get them used to it, but it is much better than fighting them to stand still.
I like the information on training, which is all very sensible and specific to this breed, which is not the same as training a Golden Retriever. I 've trained one. I find much of the advice all through this book directed at keeping the new owner informed and calm about what to do when you first own this breed. I saw that another reviewer criticized the book for not getting into handstripping, but my thought is, why would you want to do handstripping? It is painful for the dog and consumes hours of time for you, and in the end, my dog did not look different. I had read in other books that the coat becomes soft and light colored but that did not happen with my dog. This grooming advice is exactly the way I do it, and it took me about two or three years of the five years I owned Griffin to figure it out. My opinion is that if you are going to the trouble of finding a Brussels Griffon to own, you should read this book.

Best book out there on this terrific breed!,

Ever notice how the majority of "breed specific" books contain 90% material that applies to just about all dogs, with just 10% actually being relevant to the breed? Not this one! A great, comprehensive, griffon specific book!

I am lucky enough to have a Brussels for just over a year now and this is the best information source I have found, both prior to ownership and after. It is written by an individual that really cares for the breed and has extensive knowledge. And it reads like you are sitting across the kitchen table from the author absorbing her knowledge. And believe me...I should know what a great experience this is as I am fortunate enough to have as part of my family a wonderful baby girl from the author. I waited a long time for this book....thank you ...

My husband and I just got our very first Brussels Griffon and found this book to be very helpful. I am constantly going back and re-reading it. The reason why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because I think it could have used even more info. I would recommend this book to anyone that is a first time Griffon owner.

Unbelievably good book about Griffons,
By Elaine Mensa (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brussels Griffons (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I don't usually like these kinds of books because the ones I've bought in the past have just been one basic book with different covers for different breeds. So I was very surprised to find out that this book was actually written by an EXPERT in the breed, an author who has had this breed for 25 years and has bred pets and champions in the show ring. I even found a top-ranked agility Griffon from her kennel, Parisfield. Anyway, there is not one single word in this book that is generic. It is all very specific about Griffons. This author has lived with them and watched them and loved them. She writes about why they always push their faces in pillows and how to tell if they are feeling well and what you really need to train them to do, which is different from a lot of those general training books. I just couldn't recommend this book more highly. It is well-written by someone who knows the breed.

great resource to go back to,
This review is from: Brussels Griffons (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I purchased this book when I became interested in the breed. I knew nothing about the breed before purchasing. Several weeks later I became the owner of a griffon puppy. I went back to the book over and over again to learn more how to raise this little puppy. It has been a wonderful resource. And a wonderful dog to own.

The Best Book on Brussels Griffons -- Really helpful.,
By
This review is from: Brussels Griffons (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book if you are seriously interested in Brussels Griffons. The author is one of the top breeders of show Brussels Griffons, but she really knows EVERYTHING about how to keep a Brussels Griffon as a pet. When you buy this book, you are probably already in love with the breed, but this book explains all their little quirks. All the things that work well when training Griffons. Things they need, funny things they do, like smush their faces into pillows, how to train them. This book is very specifically about Brussels Griffons. The only criticism might be that it does not get into breeding them. But as a book for an owner of a Brussels Griffon, this is the best book on the market.

Best Book on Brussels Griffons,
By Maureen "Maureen" (Pemberton) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brussels Griffons (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
We were looking to get a small dog for our family but we didn't know what kind. We heard Brussels Griffons are great family dogs so we bought this. This is a wonderful book! It really tells what the breed is like. We have a new puppy now and he is just perfect for us. The chapter on health is really interesting. This is written for a beginner so our daughter has been able to read it and help with the new dog. I bought a lot of books when I was looking for a new dog but none of them were as clear and well-written as this one.
