Product Description

Size: Set of 1

The Black and Tan Turtle is the ultimate device for creating classic Black and Tans and other layered beers. Formed from premium-grade stainless steel, the endangered Macroclemys temminicki (alligator snapping turtle) is known to be the animal most closely resembling a black-and-tan spoon in nature, possessing the shell-shape, claws and snappers to be a natural for the job! Perhaps this makes the alligator snapping turtle the stout-lover's best friend. The claws fit perfectly on a pint glass, the body transforms a stream of stout into tiny rivulets which facilitate layering. The mouth of the snapper makes for a handy bottle opener, too. And for animal lovers and those concerned with natural environments, portions of the proceeds from every purchase of this hip, dual-function tool go to the Lagerhead Foundation, an organization dedicated to turtle habitat conservation and restoration projects. Last but not least, this snappy guy comes packaged with recipes for ten different half-and-half drinks. A must-have for the stout at heart.

I am a true fan of the Lagerhead Black and Tan turtle! It works great and is easier and more entertaining to bring out than a typical black and tan spoon. If you enjoy making your own layered beer beverages (the package comes with recipes for other options than a typical american style black and tan) than this is the product to own. The only time this doesn't work perfectly is when the nitrogen cartridge in the bottle or can of Guinness doesn't activate properly, and in that case it is not a Lagerhead design flaw. I bought one, and now most of my friends did too.

Lagerhead Black & Tan Turtle: This is a great option for creating a Black&Tan or Half&Half.... My very first effort was a beautiful glass of Guinness and Bass Ale, the second creation was Guinness and Harp... I am convince the Turtle is definately better than the old upside down spoon...

We bought this as a Christmas gift for a friend but will definitely be getting another for ourselves and others. If you like drinking black and tans it makes making them much easier. The "turtle" sits evenly on the glass (no more trying to balance a spoon on the rim) and you just pour the beer over it. It's also a bottle opener and a great conversation starter. Highly recommend it!

Love the turtle - named ours "Tippy". After drinking several "muddy" attempts to pour a Black and Tan, we finally tried the canned Guinness with the nitrogen ball. That did the trick, and now we pour absolutely perfectly layered beers.

So the turtle is very attractive (daughter gets a real kick out of it) but it doesn't make the greatest layered beers. It just sits too hit. I used to make black and tans and half and half's years ago with a bent spoon or even just angling the glass and if I remember correctly I got much better separation than with this turtle. Admittedly I've only made a few black and tans with the turtle so there could be a learning curve (not sure what else you can do than to make sure the first (light beer) has a little head and to pour the second slowly). Maybe I need to pour quickly?

However it get's four stars because of the appeal. It's a great conversation starter and a okay bottle opener. Why do I say it's only okay as a bottle opener? Well it's actually a little sharp around the edges too. I can see that if I had been drinking a few and not careful I could potentially cut myself with it. I plan to update this review in a few weeks if I get better results after I try making more. I really wanted to buy a few of these as gifts and still might even it it doesn't work that well since it looks pretty cool with my other bar utensils.

Also the cardboard holder actually has a list of beer recipes on the back which I wasn't expecting so that was pretty cool. And if it matters to anyone, the product is made in India (as stated on the cardboard).

The design is cute and looks exactly like a turtle. It works great and looks good with a bar set, my friends compliment it all the time or asks what it does then wants to try it!

I bought a Black and Tan Turtle as well as a traditional Guinness brand pouring spoon so that I could make proper snakebites at home. While I was not particularly impressed with the Guinness spoon, possibly because it requires more patience and skill than I possess to get a good pour.

The Turtle, on the other hand, is much easier to use. It sits lower in the glass, which decreases the distance the Guinness has to travel and thereby minimizes the mixing of the two liquids. It also has a larger and more centered dome surface which distributes the Guinness more slowly and evenly. In my experience, this worked much better at getting good separation when pouring snakebites.

The Turtle also gets bonus points in my book for being a bottle opener and for being shaped like an angry turtle. :)

Pros:
Better pour than Guinness spoon
Bottle opener
Cool turtle shape
Stainless steel for easy cleaning and hopefully long life

Cons:
Slightly more expensive than the Guinness spoon
Has some nooks that are not so easy to clean if washing by hand
Turtle mouth is sharp and may be unsafe in the hands of children
