5.0 out of 5 stars Misery's dark nightmare!, January 30, 2005
You may consider a bit exaggerate this statement but with just only six notable exceptions in all the story's cinema I had not ever seen such portrait which showed with dramatic precision the real essence of the human misery.

Thanks to an admirable cast and an overwhelming and realistic, you will feel since the first shots the portentous camera work and the sordidness of this underworld in the same heart of the sacred Rome.

This movie is supported by smart Fellinian devices the black humor and the unfinished irony in this unusual family where the fight for surviving will seal its own codes.

Nino Manfredi made one of his best performances ever.

Watch this powerful movie to realize how far can the reality surpass the fiction.

One of the top Italian films ever made!

If one likes most of Hollywood one will not like this movie. If one is very moralistic and judgemental one will not like this movie. If one looks for black and white, one will find colorfull. I look for a masterpiece and I found one.

This review is from: Ugly Dirty and Bad (Brutti Sporchi E Cattivi) [Non-US Format, PAL Region 2] (DVD)
Down and Dirty is a better title for this DVD. A somewhat crude look at life in the slums of Rome. Very funny in its way. You should know Italian and maybe Portuguese, since the dialog is in Italian and the subtitles are in Portuguese.

This is a beautiful movie about the life of an impoverished Italian family. Very well played. I do not understand Italian very well, and it was necessary to view the movie repeatedly, until all the details from subtitles sunk in. It was well worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant film, can we get a nice dvd release in english here?, December 12, 2011
This review is from: Ugly Dirty and Bad (Brutti Sporchi E Cattivi) [Non-US Format, PAL Region 2] (DVD)
An all time classic film. While its a little racy, its really a good all ages movie for the whole family to see, as a cautionary tale at least.
Its so "lol" hilarious you have to see it to believe it. Watch Nino, with one good eye, take some quality time to discern whether an item picked up off the ground is his lost shoe or a rat.
I'm still working on my old vhs to dvd, which is watchable, but Its a shame this hasn't been released on dvd in the US. When it is, i'll be the first to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ugly dream and masterpiece, February 27, 2009
This is one of the truly great dream logic films ever made. It stands with Even Dwarves Started Small as a depiction of something like a true dream. This is not a mystical or beautiful beautiful dream like Holy Mountain, or The Color Of Pomegranates. It feels like folk art. This movie is art. Anti-intellectual theatre of the absurd. From what I've read this is considered a comedy in Italy. I laughed the first time I saw Blue Velvet, not constantly like The Joker but I laughed. This movie did not make me laugh. This is from the earth like a worm. It's a found object. I would like to compare it to Out of the Blue -- a film with an amoral even malicious heart. Late in Out of the Blue three very realistic adults plan the rape of the punk girl; this is unpleasant and the quality of the acting becomes too real I'll call it too real as in acting of the highest quality or it's real and disguating behavior and that was the scene that came to mind while watching Down & Dirty as the group attack on a girl in a slum outhouse takes us to the end. Sometimes you don't want to think just do. I keep thinking and this one doesn't, that's what I think here all action without thought.

Jerzy Kosinski would never allow The Painted Bird to made into a film. That book was best described as "a medieval parable." This movie is a medieval parable. A look at the Dark Ages with motor bikes.
