Grade 5-8–James and Morgan Parker, 10-year-old twins, set off to southern Utah to explore Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park with their parents, who had worked at Zion when they were in college. This adventure story is filled with interesting information about the parks, pictures, maps, and diagrams that help explain the landscape, climate, and topography of the area. The family members each keep a journal and the various entries help to personalize their experiences. They help to rescue an injured woman hiking, encounter a rattlesnake, and must split up to perform their own missions to help Mr. Parker, who slips and falls in the Narrows during a rainstorm. Graf is clear about the cautions that must be exercised when camping and hiking in wilderness areas. The events that the Parkers experience are realistic and quite common, and the full-color photos are spectacular. An appealing array of nature sketches and depictions of the Parkers in action also appears throughout. Graf currently instructs part-time at Chico State University, teaching classes in child development and children's literature, and is a weather man for KHSL-TV. Graf has been a TV weathercaster at six different television stations and an elementary school teacher for nine years. My wife and I recently took our 3rd grade daughter on a trip to Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks. We found 2 of the "Parkers" books in the Zion Visitor's Center and got them for our daugher. After she finished the first book, she very excitedly came to her mother and I to tell us about how good it was!!! Very high praise indeed...She also informed us that this author should be one that her school invites to their annual Literacy Festival where the school invites a couple of authors in with their works to speak to the kids. The school principal let me know this is the first time a kid has suggested a particular author. High praise indeed.
