Best fun I've had in writing---,
By
This review is from: The Bubba Chronicles (Paperback)
I was lucky enough to be included in the BUBBA CHRONICLES because of a story Selina and I wrote one long weekend ("Extremely Odd Jobs"). I'm even luckier, because Selina Rosen is one of the most witty, talented and creative writers I've ever met---and working with her gave me a chance to stretch some writing muscles I hadn't used before. Read Selina's work and give yourself a treat. "Prom Date" still makes me laugh hard enough to make my ribs hurt (even after a half-dozen readings). If you aren't falling down laughing after reading this collection, I suspect you're dead.

Bubba Lives!,

This book is an excellent illustration of the need for small-press publications. Had Yard Dog Press not published this volume of short stories, the readers would've been robbed. From the first (and best) story, "Prom Date," to the last, Selina Rosen brings a quirky sensibility to her work. "Prom Date" alone is worth the price of admission. I had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Rosen read the story to a SRO crowd and had everyone in stitches. Would you rather not take a date to a prom or take a dead prom date?

Silliness at its best!,

This has to be one of the best collections of so-called "regional" humor in print today. I wasn't sure I'd like it, but a friend pushed the book on me, and by the time I'd finished "Prom Date" I knew I had a keeper. Rosen knows the people she writes about, knows the good and the bad of them, and she shows you it doesn't matter if you're from small town Arkansas or the big city, what matters is, did the first girl you ever asked out kill herself to avoid going to the prom with you? Is your Dad just crazy when he says he's packing up the family every year to run from a demon...or is he really running from a demon? Are you sure you'd recognize a serial killer--and what if they're doing the community a service?
This wonderful collection had me laughing out loud, surprised me, and made me think. It even managed to creep me out, and the way Rosen can change directions guarantees she'll never be typecast, or bored. Yes, Elvis does wander through a story--and he's perfect. "Extremely Odd Jobs" is my favorite of the group. Most of the stories in this collection can be read aloud to share the laughter. So, if you want a funny, biting AND compassionate look at Bubbas, here's your book.

Bubba Sucks,

I haven't read any of the other "Bubba" stuff, but this collection is dreadful. The stories are uninteresting, the characters flat and boring. Frankly, I'm sorry I paid to read it.

Stupid,

This review is from: The Bubba Chronicles (Paperback)
Selina Rosen is a very, very good writer. I have read her science fiction and had a hard time putting them down. But this book is extremely bad. It's not funny. Other reviewers have made mention of the Prom Story. I found no humor and thought it was stupid in the extreme. Hopefully, Selina Rosen will stick with her science fiction titles. She does a great job with those.
