I make custom cakes for birthdays and other special occasions, and for years, have been using wooden dowels (sold in arts and crafts stores) to provide internal support to tiered cakes. Then one day I was watching Duff Goldman working on a cake on his show "Ace of Cakes", and I noticed that he had something that looked like a fat straw that he was using in place of a dowel.
After researching a bit, I discovered that he uses boba tea straws instead of dowels. This appealed to me greatly since cutting wooden dowels is such a pain in the neck. I ordered these straws and I LOVE them! I use them for cakes up to three tiers without any worry of compromising the structural integrity of the cake (note: I do use a couple more than wooden dowels, just in case). For cakes with more than three tiers, I use a combination of straws and wooden dowels, just to be safe. I have found that if I strategically place one or two wooden dowels amongst the straws, I rest easier knowing my cake is all the more sturdy! I highly recommend these straws for cake decorating purposes. They are significantly cheaper and so much easier to work with! I am going to search a local Asian food market for them, so maybe I can save on shipping, too!
