3.0 out of 5 stars What happened to the vocals?
Make no mistake, this is a fine slice of late 90's power pop. Featuring ex-Jellyfish leader Andy Sturmer on drums and some outstandingly melodic songs, it should have been perfect. I have heard the original Japanese issue of this CD, and this later edition is notably changed. Gone are some of the best harmony vocals, and it sounds as if a good portion of the lead...

I must admit I discovered The Merrymakers by accident when scanning the web for info on the great Andy Sturmer.I was highly sceptical at first but upon first listen, I realised that Bubblegun was a pop gem! I never thought that there would be a band to replace Jellyfish but not only do the Merrymakers pull it off with delightfullly melodic tunes and masterful musicianship, they have excelled ! I would rate "Under the light of the moon" as a modern day classic akin to anything by the Beatles or Jellyfish. There are also traces of Badfinger, the LA's ,the Posies to be heard in Merrymaker's music. It almost makes me want to pack up and move to Sweden ! Trust me and buy this fabulous album. You will be instantly hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars If they don't MAKE you MERRY, you're hopeless., May 5, 1999

I can't say enough about this delightful CD! I sampled it here at Amazon after hearing "Fine Line," and fell madly in love. This CD is divine through and through. Infectuous pop at its best, with harmonies to die for, especially on "Sad." The lyrics to "April's Fool" are particularly clever, and "Monument Of Me" & "She's A Radio," from the bonus CD are loads of fun. Besides the obvious (Beatles), I hear a La's influence (at least on "I'm in...Love!"), which is a GOOD thing. Do yourself a favor, and pick this up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just like candy, November 3, 2000

I originally picked up this cd at the college radio station i work at, www.kvrx.org and i was really surprised. It's straight British pop with a good beat. The lyrics aren't the greatest, but if what you're looking for is a good cd to pop in when you're in a good mood, this is it. I try and play a song from the cd every week on my show.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wake up America!!!, June 10, 1999

Why is it that bands(?) like Korn and Rob Zombie are selling millions of records and great melodic bands such as The Merrymakers and Enuff Z'Nuff stay in "critically acclaimed" but "never heard of them" status? There is no reason "Bubblegun" should not go platinum. It is full of great, hummable tunes that you just can't get out of your head, especially the Beatlesque "Under the Light of the Moon." Pure brilliance. To all the radio program directors of America, "WAKE UP!!!"

This is CD that was a great find in the sea of noise that is produced today. Songs with lyrics and melodies that you can not get out of your head while you are at work or school and make you hurry to your car or house to listen to this CD over and over. Bravo to the Merrymakers

The Merrymakers are a breath of fresh air. Their music is exciting and infectious...two adjectives that rarely describe most of today's music. These guys write vibrant songs that keep you singing long after your cd player has been turned off. There is a bit of filler..but hey...the other 9 songs absolutely, positively make up for it. Andy Sturmer, ex-jellyfish member is involved with production and playing drums...and anything he's involved with is destined for greatness.

4.0 out of 5 stars great (swedish!) addition to your powerpop collection, April 5, 2004
By A Customer

this cd was recommended to me way back in the day when i was on the jellyfish listserv, because andy sturmer (lead singer and drummer from jellyfish) plays on it.

my favorite tracks are:

monkey in the middle
under the light of the moon
april's fool
I'm in...Love!
and Saltwater Drinks

i was obsessed with those first two songs in college and would play each track over and over and over on headphones focusing each time on one instrument alone. same can be done with jellyfish and other bands related to jellyfish. i wish andy sturmer were back on the scene !

5.0 out of 5 stars Another slice of heaven from Sweden., November 15, 2000
This review is from: Bubblegun (Audio CD)
One of those records that hits you right away. Better yet though; one that you'll keep coming back to. I guess influences could be Beach Boys, Beatles; but they have their own sound. A great cd in and of itself, but you also get a bonus 5 song mini-cd too. If you like sing-a-long choruses and great hooks; you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered (and thus untainted) Gem, February 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bubblegun (Audio CD)
Although I thought their debut effort, "No Sleep til' Famous" was better (which shouldn't discourage you from buying this CD because five of the best songs from that album are captured in the second CD anyway), the Merrymakers' latest will not disappoint. Less emphasis is placed on the harmonic chorus this time around compared to the last, although one still cannot deny the heavy influence from Andy Sturmer's great Jellyfish. But don't write the Merrymakers off as Jellyfish II or Gigolo Aunts II. Originality of music sometimes comes not from the novelty of the sound itself, but from the honesty and purity that the listener can feel from the music. Just buy this CD and listen to the first track. you'll see...

p.s. - you're absolutely right Andy..previously the only place I could find "No Sleep.." was in Japan, but now with the internet I can buy pretty much any indy CD. Technology is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE MERRYMAKERS ARE THE NEW AND IMPROVED BEATLES, April 18, 2000

All I can say is-- BUY THIS CD NOW. Don't get me wrong when I say that these Swedish boys are the "New & Improved Beatles"; it is just that they are amazing songwriters that contain wit and melody akin to the Beatles. The Merrymakers are a band that you don't come across everyday. I laugh at the people who think that the British band Oasis had some Beatle-like sound. Oasis could not even hold a candle to Beatle Bailey with a banjo. Oasis got lucky with a few cute tunes, but they lack poetry in their lyrics. Have no worries with the Merrymakers. The Merrymakers are hopefully here to stay.
