In Strohmeyer's wacky fifth mystery starring Bubbles Yablonsky (after 2004's Bubbles a Broad), the former hairdresser and queen of the tube tops dons her first business suit ($30 hot pink skirt and jacket on layaway) to interview accused murderer Jill "Crazy Popeye" Simon for the Lehigh, Pa., News-Times, in Simon's holding cell. Unfortunately, Simon expires in mid-sentence after claiming she actually tried to save the victim, Liberty High School's beloved principal, Rudy Schmidt, who choked to death on the tie shoved down his throat. Bubbles's interview notes prove to be of interest to a number of delightfully goofy characters, including a Polish mafioso and a podiatrist with a foot fetish. Meanwhile, Bubbles hears that her boyfriend, stud-for-the-ages reporter Steve Stiletto, has announced he is engaged—to her—in a ploy to keep from getting transferred to London. This isn't exactly the kind of proposal she had fantasized. Strohmeyer pokes fun at Bubbles and her cohorts, but with obvious respect and fondness.

More About the Author

When I stumbled into this business back in 1997 as a harried mother spoofing Barbie in BARBIE UNBOUND: A PARODY OF THE BARBIE OBSESSION, I had no idea that what started out as a lark would evolve into a career writing twelve novels published in multiple languages - from Thai to German - and even a Lifetime Original Movie: Lying to Be Perfect. Some have been bestsellers. A few have won awards, mostly, I think, by accident.

Now, with the publication of KINDRED SPIRITS, from Dutton, on June 30th, I've taken my writing down a different path, exploring women's friendship, what bonds us, what makes us do incredibly stupid things for one another and how a few martinis along the way can make it all worthwhile. (And, possibly, explain the stupid things per above.)

In KINDRED SPIRITS, I hope you'll not only make friends with Beth, Carol, Mary Kay and Lynne, but also get down to some serious martini making. Ginger, Lemon, Blue, Cosmopolitan - KINDRED SPIRITS has a bunch of recipes.
Here's one for a killer CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY MARTINI.

First, dip the rim of your martini glass in melted bittersweet chocolate and freeze.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of a martini shaker muddle a few fresh raspberries. Add raspberry vodka and Godiva chocolate liqueur plus a splash of Chambord. Shake vigorously with ice. Pour into chocolate- dipped glasses and garnish with fresh raspberries.

Hey. I really want to keep you entertained. But I never said anything about keeping you thin! :)

I have enjoyed reading as many of these books as I can find. I am from the lehigh valley, Pa. She hits the nail on the head with her descriptions. They are fun and I find myself getting lost in them.I actually am a hairdresser w/ my own shop. She is accurate when describing that part of the story also.

Of all the Bubbles books this is the best. Right from the start it is fast moving and the plot has enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat.
The dry almost simple humour throughout means that you laugh at the same time you eagerily await the next clue to slove the murder. The other and often more important issue that comes through is that the book not only has a high entertaining factor but also makes very thoughful comments on working life and the role of females.
The down to earth approach is highly saitifying and a must read for all people. And the result is that I am now eagerly awaiting the next Bubbles.

If you can't wait for the next Janet Evanovich book, you will love Bubbles. Although a totally different character than Stephanie Plum, both sets of books have the same wacky sense of humor and love of family and community. The authors even know each other, the librarian told me that "Bubbles" was born at Janet Evanovich's kitchen table!
