5.0 out of 5 stars Bubbles is back and still laugh out loud funny!, June 27, 2002
This review is from: Bubbles in Trouble (Hardcover)
Bubbles is back in her second mystery. This time Bubbles is pulled into Amish country when a good friend disappears on the eve of her wedding. Bubbles has to go undercover as an Amish girl to see if she can find her friend. Of course, being Amish is more difficult for Bubbles than she could ever imagine. No electricity for her blow dryer, no make-up, and no mini-skirts or high heel shoes! What's a girl to do?

Of course the sexy Mel Gibson look alike Steve Stiletto makes an appearance as Bubbles lust/love interest. His photographic journalism job has taken him all over the world, but his feelings for Bubbles keeps pulling him right back to Pennsylvania. And when he hears what Bubbles is up to, he has to stay around to try to keep her out of trouble.

Sarah Strohmeyer's Bubbles mysteries are laugh out loud fun. The relationships Bubbles has with her mother and her daughter are familiar to anyone, but are taken to a higher, funnier level. I look forward to reading many more Bubbles books in the future. What a hoot!

4.0 out of 5 stars light breezy amateur sleuth, July 6, 2002
This review is from: Bubbles in Trouble (Hardcover)
If one can get past Bubbles' bleached hair, heavy make up and tight clothes, it isn't hard to understand why the Lehigh, Pennsylvania hairdresser wants to be a reporter. A story is the furthest thing from Bubbles' mind when she arrives at the church to walk her best friend Janice Kramer down the aisle. When Janice fails to show up, Bubbles goes to her house where she finds her buddy's dead uncle but no bride.

Learning that Janice was brought up Amish, Bubbles heads for her hometown of Wheelie in Pennsylvania's Lancaster County to find her friend and clear her name. She goes undercover dressing Amish and living with an Amish family and gets involved in a different investigation, one that could get her killed if she's not careful.

BUBBLES IN TROUBLE is a light breezy amateur sleuth novel that doesn't take it self very seriously but is none the less a very entertaining mystery. The protagonist is totally refreshing as she stays true to herself while trying to better herself. Reading a Bubbles Yablonsky novel is like watching an episode of I love Lucy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first book, December 28, 2005

BUBBLES IN TROUBLE by Sarah Strohmeyer
December 28, 2005

Amazon rating 3.5/5 stars

This wasn't as good as the first one. Bubbles is now in Amish country, trying to find her missing friend Janice, who was also a runaway bride (so to speak). When Janice goes missing, and Janice's uncle Elwood is found dead, could it be murder and is Janice the guilty party? Bubbles goes to Amish country, undercover of course, and ends up living with a family of Amish people. She is not quite convincing... (her nails should have given it away, but the family believes her excuse that they are some sort of fungicide).

I didn't find this one as funny, but not sure if it was the mood I was in or what. Steve Stiletto is now pretty much her boyfriend, although he keeps disappearing and reappearing when she least expects it. I found Bubbles' adventures in amish land pretty funny though, but the book didn't fully keep my attention as the first one did. I hope the third book is better. I feel this series is losing steam but I'm not giving up.

3.0 out of 5 stars tickles your funny bone, May 6, 2005
This review is from: Bubbles In Trouble (Bubbles Books) (Paperback)
This is the story of Bubbles Yablonsky, a Pennyslyvania hairdresser turned newspaper journalist.
This is the 2nd story in the series.
Bubbles gets drunk at a bachelorette party for her friend Janice and sings Lynyrd Skynard's Free Bird while dancing on the pool table, which many believe caused Janice to fly the coop the night before her wedding to Mickey Sinkler local cop.
When Bubbles goes looking for Janice she stumbles over the dead body of Janice's uncle Elwood.
Which sets in motion an undercover mission for Bubbles, and her crazy family as they go off to Amish Country PA and try to tackle murder, drugs, and missing Janice.
I enjoyed this one much more than I enjoyed the 1st in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bubbleicious, September 12, 2002

Received "Trouble" as a gift, loved it, got "Unbound" from library - liked it even more. I'm so sorry there aren't 5 more titles ahead of me. I don't fall down in hysterics over these adventures but my heart sure smiles hard with these good people. The books are so charming, cleverly imaginative - chock full of unanticipated mile a minute turns. And very well crafted. I don't know how anybody could rate these less than 5 respectful stars. Sarah - thanks for the pleasure. (and get to your typewriter!)

4.0 out of 5 stars a good read, July 5, 2007

This review is from: Bubbles In Trouble (Bubbles Books) (Paperback)
Though Bubbles Yablonsky is a character that seems too big a collection of stereotypes to swallow, the author managed to make her real and likeable to me. Happily, "Bubbles in Trouble" eases off on Bubbles constantly putting herself down as "dumb" which was an unappealing part of the first book, "Bubbles Unbound". The story is a bit twisty and seems to go off in all sorts of directions but the twists aren't boring or pointless. I would have enjoyed having the conclusion fleshed out more. The questions were answered, but without near the detail that the set-up was given. I loved the way Strohmeyer described the Amish country and people. Affectionate without putting them on a pedestal. I laughed at a sly reference to Tamar Myers' books. When Bubbles couldn't think of a phony name quickly, she came up with "Magadalena Yoder" but couldn't figure out why she knew that name. I don't think Strohmeyer quite reaches the quality of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum for loveable heroine because Bubbles and other characters are so over-the-top broadly comedic, but still a fun read.

2.0 out of 5 stars This took a wrong turn somewhere, June 28, 2003

This book started off good, but then got stuck in the mire somewhere in the middle. The plot really made no sense what-so-ever. The last hundred pages were extremely hard to get through. And the characters actions did seem to be true to form. The ending just had me shrugging my shoulders. I agree with another reviewer--pick it at the library if you're curious.

I love her books! They are light, enjoyable reads. This one was just as awesome as the first. Sarah Strohmeyer has created a wonderful character in Bubbles. She is hysterical, and you come to love her.

5.0 out of 5 stars I **LOVED** this book...., July 31, 2003
This review is from: Bubbles in Trouble (Hardcover)
Bubbles is truly a "unique" character.

She's a hairstylist/part time journalist who can't seem to stay out of trouble. Her journalistic abilities lead her to "Amish country" in search of a missing friend and to solve a mystery of two Amish boys arrested for stealing a car. Bubbles has to totally play the part of an Amish woman which means no tight clothes, makeup and she can't drive.

There are so many storylines and twists going on in this book (a little unrealistic) that you may get confused, but Bubbles will make you laugh. Fiction is all about escaping to another place from our everyday lives and Bubbles is definetley a person that I would love to have as a friend. You will meet plenty of interesting characters from the loud & flashy Mother to a red headed freakazoid with buck teeth.

My first read by Strohmeyer, but not my last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strohmeyer Bests Evanovich!, August 20, 2002
By
This review is from: Bubbles in Trouble (Hardcover)
The idea of Bubbles Yablonsky visiting the Amish country in disguise is enough of a device to sustain this funny novel. When Bubble's friend does not show up for her wedding, and then her friend's uncle is found dead, Bubbles takes off to save the day. Hunk Stilleto is everpresent, for he has found he cannot live without Bubbles, especially this newer innocent version in Amish garb. Maybe because I was raised in this party of the country, and addicted to shoofly pie (a murder weapon in this case), I found this novel irresistible. Bubbles gets her story and her guy this time out, and the reader gets a real fun read.
