I've seen a few reviews that state this stocking is not for beginners. I can see where some may feel that way but this was the first felt stocking kit that I tackled and it turned out very well. In fact, I entered it in the County fair last year and won first prize!! It is a very time consuming project but so worth it. I found I couldn't put it down at times. I think the key is to read the directions very well and follow them as best you can. I'm not a less is more kind of girl so I ran out of floss on many of the colors because I NEVER used just one strand as I did not like the look of it. Bucilla is great and gives you the code number for each color of floss in the instructions. If you are like me and over use the floss you can just take that number to your local craft store and buy a skein of floss.
I was lucky and had a stocking "mentor" who showed me the tricks of the trade, like lining the stocking and securing your stitches with Fray Check. She gave me the tip to line the stitched side of the stocking with fabric (she uses cotton) by sewing it to the stitched (not decorative) side of the stocking, but only at the top. I went out and purchased a very heavy felt in white and red (I planned on making more kits) and used the red to line the stocking. I sewed it to the top of the side of my stocking that showed all of my stitches (what would be the inside of the stocking)only. Then I pinned the back part of the stocking (what comes with the kit to complete the stocking) to the decorated portion of the stocking as the instructions advise with my heavy red felt sandwiched in between. I then followed the directions closing the stocking so that it may actually be used.

I am so proud of this stocking! I had never done one before and it took me MANY MANY MANY hours to complete. I worked on it every spare moment and VERY late into the night for about 3 weeks. I do not have awesome sewing skills and had never done any kind of embroidery before so that could be why it took so long. However, if i could do it then i'm pretty sure anyone else could. I made it for my 3yr old daughter because she loves to dance and it was the only stocking i could find that was really girly and christmasy at the same time. Because of my lack of experience with sewing and embroidering, the intructions were a little hard for me at times but i figured it out(actually I asked my husband). This might be embarrassing, but i also had to look up how to do some of the stitchs on u tube. I wanted the stocking to be absolutely perfect. i'm sure there are many other stocking kits out there that would have been much easier for a first timer, but this one is just so darling that i couldn't settle for anything else. plus my daughter LOVES IT! So if you really put a lot of heart and time into it you wont be disappointed!

This came out so beautiful! A word of warning though, these types of stocking kits are not meant for beginners. You have to be somewhat experienced in sewing or embroidery. This is probably the 10th one I've done, and they make wonderful gifts to newlyweds to start their new lives together.

A few tips.
- Do NOT cut out the pieces all at once.
- If possible, do all of the embroidery and sequins first. Keep in mind the cut lines so that you don't cut your stitches when cutting out the pieces. If you do these before hand, it will make assembly go much faster.
- If you want to make the stocking stronger, use interface on both the front and back pieces before starting.
- I do the name embroidery last, before sewing the back on. This way, I can change placement if I want to.
- Don't be afraid to make changes....if there is something you don't like and the stocking won't miss it, then skip it. Sometimes the detail is overkill and I leave some out. For example, I didn't feel like doing the curls on the side of her head...and left those off.
- For really small pieces, use fabric glue.
- For the rest, I recommend you stitch them on.....it won't look the same if you use glue. If you're going to put the effort into making it, you may as well go all the way!

I have absolutely never, ever sewn anything in my life except for the little practice I had when I was about 5 years old. Picking this up seemed extremely daunting for someone with little sewing skill but the kit comes with extremely comprehensive instructions that walked me through everything. The only thing that I ended up needing were pins, plastic bins to separate beads and sequins, sharp sewing scissors and extra floss (but that is easily findable in any craft store, fabric store, or walmart I believe). This project has to be for an organized person because of how many pieces you will have to juggle, but really, coming from a complete beginner, it isn't hard at all. It won't be a perfect project but it certainly will be something that you will be proud of!

I spent about 2 weeks making this, but that's only if you have time to put in a couple 6 hour days like I did.

2 warnings!:
This is not a usable stocking, it's just for decoration. Though if you bought an extra fleece sheet (available at hobby lobby or other craft stores) you could potentially do it.

Don't, for any reason, cut off the numbers to any of the pieces unless you pin them on or you are about to sew them to the stocking! It was wayyyy confusing to me toward the end.
