After the first few volumes of Phil Vischer's What's in the Bible? series, I wasn't convinced he'd manage to finish his introduction to the Bible in 13 volumes. But after watching him finish the Old Testament in Volume 9: God Speaks!, I think he might just do it.

This one hour entry in the series tackles the 17 books of the prophets. As always, there are two, roughly 25 minutes each. The first part is more an introduction to these books. Phil and his band of puppets explain such things as what a prophet is (and how it is different from a profit), when and where they lived in the history we've already learned, and what kind of oracles they gave.

Yes, that means that all 17 books are covered in the second part, which is actually closer to 30 minutes. A few of the more familiar books are given more time, like Daniel and Jonah. But we do get a brief introduction to the contents of all 17 of these books and what their main themes are.

But wait - we aren't done yet. After a summary of the prophets (with Sunday School Lady leading us on rap), we get a summary of everything we've learn through the Old Testament. Okay, so it's only a couple minutes and more focused on history than lessons, but it is a good reminder of where we are and what has happened. Moments from the previous DVD's popped into my mind as I watched. And I would rather they focused on new content than extensive summary in every disc (that was actually something I was complaining about early on).

Normally, at this point, I'd talk about how entertaining the video is. That would be the one point where this one falls flat. There is so much ground to cover that the jokes and banter between the characters is kept to a minimum.

I wasn't sure how I was going to explain prophecy to my young son. Of course, Mr. Vischer knows how! We bought this volume as soon as it came out and we were not disappointed!

As always, I love these DVDs. This episode finished the OT and the chronology chart of when the prophets lived is AMAZING! I hope they put it up on their website to print off.

Most children's bible programs are slow and boring. Small children don't want to watch them. This was fast paced and funny. Though it's probably best for children five and up.

Home Run Number 9 for “What’s in the Bible?”

How would you cover all 17 books of the Prophets in the Bible? In about an hour? And make it fun?

Phil Vischer, creator of VeggieTales, does that in Volume 9 of “What’s in the Bible?”

This DVD does an excellent job of describing what a prophet is, yet it also covers a surprising number of details, including the difference between the major and minor prophets. Is prophecy mainly mean telling the future? No. Phil Vischer and his puppets tell us why.

Every one of the 17 books is summarized at least briefly. What’s important about Isaiah? Did Jeremiah give up? Who is thought to have written Lamentations? How did Ezekiel perform some of his warnings to the people? What stories are covered in the book of Daniel?

Each prophet is shown on a time line so we can see when they lived and more easily learn where each wrote.

It could be hard to keep an element of surprise in a 13-volume series. Yet one highlight of this DVD Volume 9 is the wacky rap-style song summarizing the Prophets, sung by the elderly Sunday School Lady and two British brothers, Clive and Ian.

Every disk in this series combines high quality teaching with colorful fun.

We have all of these DVDs. My children love to watch them in the car on trips to grandparents. My husband and I even find ourselves listening to the information and learning something new. Beware - some of the songs will stick in your head ALL DAY LONG! Our 5 year old has watched the videos since she was 2 and has enjoyed them at every stage. As she gets older she discovers and understands more of the information and humor... so she can definitely grow with these DVDs. Our second child is starting out on the same path of loving them, too.

My kids AND I have learned so much from this series. They present the Bible in a sensical way, while celebrating that it is God's Word. The kids love the puppets and silly presentation style, while I love the information. The presentation and the information join to truly teach children the meaning of the Bible, not just the stories.

This dvd puts the prophets in their historical context, mentions some of the unusual ways they conveyed their message, and sums up that message: stop doing evil and do good, love God and your neighbor, practice justice, mercy, and humility: the Messiah is coming! All this in two half-hour episodes kids will understand and enjoy.
