Book Description

May 27, 1998
Dutch O'Brien is one tough cookie.  You have to be if you're a private detective working the not-so-angelic streets of Los Angeles. But after a broken love affair nearly leads to a nervous breakdown, Dutch realizes that even she needs to take a break--so she finds what she thinks is a slow-paced, stress-free job as a technical consultant for the popular TV series, STONE, PRIVATE EYE. But while the TV show is a guaranteed cure for insomnia, life on the set is far from sedate--thanks to arrogant, amorous star Buck Stevens.

Amy Westin, the young, ambitious actress who plays Buck's daughter on screen, halts their off-screen affair ("If you dusted Amy for prints, you'd find Buck's in all the wrong places"). Buck flies into a rage but remains clearheaded enough to make a play for Dutch. That night, in her apartment, Dutch receives a package from an unknown admirer: a flowered hatbox scented with roses. Inside, wrapped in pink tissue, is Amy Westin's severed head. And a note: "You're next."

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Right off the bat, Demeter "Dutch" O'Brien, the PI who is introduced in this Hollywood whodunit is different-she has a mother. Not just any "lay mother" either, but a successful Beverly Hills psychologist and feminist who has refused to identify Dutch's father and peevishly wonders, as Dutch puts it, why her daughter can't just pretend that "like Minerva I'd sprung full-blown from the head of Zeus, herself being Zeus." Unfortunately, even Burditt's snappy dialogue isn't enough to save a lackluster plot. Recovering from a broken heart, Dutch has taken a supposedly safe job consulting for Stone, Private Eye, a weekly TV mystery series whose dullness is relieved only by its improbability. But with crazy writers and an even crazier leading man, the reprehensible Buck Stevens, a folksy guy who goes ballistic whether he's being refused by a woman or can't find his jar of peanut butter, Dutch astutely realizes this job is probably not the piece of cake she was looking for. When she receives the head of the female star in a hat box with a chilling note ("you're next"), it's too late to back out. The detecting here isn't much better than what Buck does on his show every week, but Burditt's sure and sassy tone is something of a compensation.

From Library Journal

The title is certainly eye-catching, but this novel's scandalous Hollywood setting should also lure readers. While recovering from a love-induced nervous breakdown, private investigator Demeter "Dutch" O'Brien serves as a script consultant for a television series that stars the aging, petulant Buck Stevens and his ambitious new conquest, Amy Westin. Shortly after Amy dumps Buck, she winds up dead, and her head is delivered to Dutch. Add Dutch's wealthy psychiatrist mother and gigolo stepfather, her lost love, her unknown real father, and the cute cop who desires her, and the soap opera builds: With its affectionate humor, slick prose, endearing heroine, and lots of action, this one gets a grade A.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny & entertaining with a spunky heroine to root for, May 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Buck Naked (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a fast & fun read with highly entertaining characters. Dutch wasn't a know-it-all P.I. but one whose flaws made her endearing. This "not so tough cookie" treasures her independence, but also seeks to make connections with loved ones. Don't expect the "murder mystery" to be complex -- the zany characters are what make this mystery fun. In fact, the most important mystery Dutch is trying to solve seems to be the lifelong mystery of herself, as she finally finds some concrete clues to her father's identity. Minor characters also change and grow by the end of novel. Don't expect deep social commentary or heart-wrenching drama -- but if you're looking for a light mystery where you can care about the characters, this is one!

4.0 out of 5 stars A faced paced novel with a strong, humorous leading woman., June 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Buck Naked (Mass Market Paperback)
I especially enjoyed this book because the main character was so human, her strengths and weaknesses are a real part of the book. The book itself is funny, a great set of characters - including her mother the shrink. The ending made sense, without reaching at all. All in all I highly recommend this book, and eagerly look foward to her next one.

2.0 out of 5 stars All over the map, August 13, 2005
This review is from: Buck Naked (Mass Market Paperback)
Too much goes on in this book. It would have been better at 200 pages sticking to the mystery of who killed the actress. Instead there's a lot of kind of sick and not believable stuff about Dutch (why is this her nickname?) and her boyfriend Michael. Meanwhile, she's flirting with Buddy. And then there's her mom. Too much. This book is unfocused and the main character's quirks are too weird. Skip it.
