"Buck Owens - All-Time Greatest Hits, Vol.2"

Please see my review of Volume 1 in this 3-part series from Curb for an overall view of the series.

Unlike that first volume [and volume 3], all eleven presented here were huge Country hits for Buck, with the lowest in terms of chart success being track 6, Second Fiddle, which reached # 24 in May 1959. Of course, that had to be included since it was his very first hit record. However, one would think it might have been track 1 of Volume 1 instead of track 5 here, a wierd pattern of not following any kind of sequence in presenting his hits.

This one starts off with his 20th hit, Love's Gonna Live Here, which also happens to be his best of 90, reaching # 1 in the fall of 1963 and staying there for an incredible SIXTEEN weeks and thirty weeks in total on the charts. Strangely, it did not cross over to the pop Hot 100, although nineteen of his songs did, the best being 1965's I've Got A Tiger By The Tail [# 1 Country for 5 weeks and # 25 Hot 100], which is included in Volume 1.

Clearly, Tall Dark Stranger was not everyone's cup of tea - but it did go to # 1 in 1969 so it obviously appealed to quite a few.

There is one page of liner notes [author unknown], and the sound reproduction remains excellent. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a specific song, but if you want to get a better overall compilation go to one of the others being offered which present 20 tracks and up on one volume.

True, hard-core Western Country! Thanks Buck Owens for years of super music that stayed true to the sound. Live on. Live well. Be happy. Listen to Buck.

A bit schmaltzier than VOL 1, ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2 continues the tracking of one of Country's true masters.

"Tall Dark Stranger" is horrible, just the kind of sugary-sweet molassas Owens fans think he is above. Luckily, that is one of the few misteps here; tunes like "Love's Gonna Live Here," "Above & Beyond," and "Gonna Have Love" are true classics.
