5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar Indie Rapper Strikes Again, December 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Buck Up Princess (Audio CD)
Being the second most famous rapper from Halifax, Nova Scotia must be a tough burden to bear, but Josh Martinez is finally living up to the potential he displayed on his previous eps and albums. His sing-song style has evolved into full blown songwriting, and the production is better than ever. If you like Sage Francis and Atmosphere, you'll definately be digging this kid. Turns out he's only 23, so there'll hopefully be a lot more to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars - When Life Gets Tough......."Buck Up Princess"!!, April 15, 2005

The third release from Nova Scotian Josh Martinez is definitely his strongest to date (not to discount his recent EPs "Midriff Music" with Samix, and "Chicarones" with Sleep) which has more of a focussed delivery and tone. Josh frequently indulges in his vices of choice like drugs and alcohol as part of the album's themes, but he also laments these bad habits, and loathes his lazy lifestyle. "Rainy Day" seems to encompass all of Josh's misgivings with the way his life plays out, and is one of the strongest tracks. It along with "Forged," is produced by Mcenroe and features him on vocals on this latter track as well. Other guests include Awol One and Governor Bolts, among many others, and the majority of Buck Up Princess is produced by Moves, though Jel pops up for one track. "BC Trees" is a shout out to Josh's transplant home of Vancouver, "Hobo's Lullaby" is an ode to those who live life by hopping train to train, "Another Day" is a song of happy pessimism, and "Women Loving Women"...is well... self explanatory. As demonstrated, Josh covers a lot of terrain with Buck Up Princess, which is why the album is distinguished from his prior releases. But why does the hidden track appear on track four??
