pretty impressive one-hander., October 4, 2009
This review is from: Buck 730 X-Tract One Handed Opening Multi-Tool (Misc.)
I have three knives. The swiss army knife goes in the glove box. It has a corkscrew. That is a very important tool, and I have often been the only person able to provide one. I have a Ka-Bar that I take camping. It is the most useful camp knife on the planet. It hammers tent-pegs into the ground, it cuts everything, and -- according to legend of the Ka-Bar name, it will protect you from larger carnivorous wildlife. It scares the grocer, however. And with good reason; it's big. The Buck X-Tract lives on my belt. I use the knife often, the pliers regularly (and despite their relatively small size they do an impressive job), and the screwdrivers lots. Though the handle, when the tools are deployed, feels a little hollow and flimsy, it has yet to prove so. And ever single tool opens with one hand, locks in place securely and automatically, and easily unlocks and closes with one hand. That's pretty impressive. Initial review above is from 2009, the following update is from 2011:
The knife on this tool is tough to get really sharp, and it tends to dull quicker than I'd like. Sometimes the pliers aren't secure in their closed position and will shake or bump loose, impeding blade use.

Multi-Tasker!, March 27, 2009
This review is from: Buck 730 X-Tract One Handed Opening Multi-Tool (Misc.)
The Xtract is the perfect tool for my needs! I've been a fan of multi-tools for a long time, and I've bought everything from the Swiss Champ, Leatherman series, Gerber, Sheffield, Coast, and Buck series. Each of the major brands has well designed tools, so its up to the user to determine what suits him or her best. I've found the Buck to be very strong, yet its light enough to carry all day, and its ballistic nylon holster allows for either vertical or horizontal carry, a most useful feature. The tools are few, but superbly made; a razor sharp 3 inch partially serrated blade, a sturdy pair of screwdrivers, a can opener, and a pliers. All tools can be opened and closed one-handed, and the lanyard attachment can serve as an excellent glass breaker, so it's really another tool! Some comments state that the pliers is too small to exert a reasonable grip, but if you grip the handle with your fingers instead of your thumb you'll find you can double the grip strength of the pliers, enough to torque loose some stubborn bolts! All in all, its a tool that reflects its design philosophy; build a multitool with a few critical/most used tools really well vs. a multitool with lots of implements but with possible design and quality limitations.

An excellent tool for everyday use, July 21, 2010
This review is from: Buck 730 X-Tract One Handed Opening Multi-Tool (Misc.)
I purchased this product in Sept 2009 and have worn it practically every day since it arrived. This tool is everything you would want for everyday use. The one-handed unfolding nubs for every function are well balanced and just the right size, the number and selected purposes of each component are perfectly thought out, and the case is so small and unnoticeable that it is easily overlooked or ignored as a phone case. The blade remains fantastically sharp and the entire unit smoothly operating despite having done zero maintenance or lubrication on it.
The only reason I don't give this product 5 stars is that the pliers design does not allow as much hand strength leverage as I would like. However I've accommodated for this by flipping the unit over and pressing the narrow lever into my palm while squeezing the bulk of the unit with my fingers. Not ideal, but if it's insufficient to wrench whatever I'm trying to open then I should get a real pair of pliers. One note about the pliers: the tip is as fine as a pair of tweezers and I have used it on several occasions to remove metal shards and wooden splinters.
