(guitar), Jimmy Ashhurst (bass), Xavier Muriel (drums) -- are one of the premier rock bands of the new millennium, having sold more than three million records in America alone and touring virtually non-stop, playing with everyone from AC/DC to Avenged Sevenfold, touring sold-out arenas alongside Nickelback and KISS, and ... Editorial Reviews

Once upon a time in Los Angeles--during the infamous mid-'80s Guns N' Roses era--the City of Angels was spewing forth dirty, blues-influenced rock bands. Little Caesar, Junkyard, the Hangmen--even the names were redolent of dirty rock & roll, Harleys, and barroom brawls. A new breed of rebel rock has emerged in Buckcherry--sober, tattooed blues-metallers whose charismatic singer, Josh Todd, boasts a compelling Iggy Pop-Jim Morrison-Axl Rose persona. Buckcherry's 12-track debut album, produced by Terry Date (Pantera) with coproduction from former Sex Pistol Steve Jones, kicks off with the nasty, aggressive groove of "Lit Up." While the song is irresistible, many might have a problem with the "I love the cocaine" chorus. Still, Todd's persona works well with the band's aggro, melodic stomp, and with bands such as the Black Crowes, Nashville Pussy, and Honky Toast keeping barroom rock alive, Buckcherry are a ballsy and bold entry into the fray, as suited to share a stage with Hanoi Rocks as they would be with Motörhead. --Katherine Turman

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard rock as it should be August 31, 2001
By Brad
Format:Audio CD
Back in 1987, a hard rock song called "Welcome To The Jungle" by a band called Guns N' Roses hit the airwaves. I was instantly blown away. 12 years later, after enduring a decade dominated by alternative and "grunge" music, I turn on the radio to hear an amazingly catchy, hard-rocking song named "Lit Up". All I could think was who on earth is this, and how rocking is THIS? Again, I was blown away. For sure, this debut masterpiece by Buckcherry does not disappoint if you are a hard rock fan. After "Lit Up", two equally rocking tracks follow--"Crushed" and "Dead Again". The fourth track, "Check Your Head", is the first hint of a pace slowdown; but the message is serious and the vocals are searing. "Dirty Mind" absolutely rocks again, while "For The Movies" slows things down again but just a bit. If you like balls-to-the-wall hard rock and miss the glory days of Guns N' Roses (which to me is the "Appetite For Destruction" album only), this album will be a refreshing change from most rock releases by "new bands" in recent years. For younger folks who listen to this and like it, this might help you understand why "old folks" like myself miss the "heavy metal" days of old.

The Good

Despite the fact this release is an obvious cash-in, it's still the album that put Buckcherry on the map and allowed them a little bit of recognition for a while. Who can forget the jarring opening riffs out the balls-to-the wall party anthem "Lit Up?" I still turn the radio up every time this one kicks off on the radio. "Crushed" is also just as in-your-face and raw as it's predecessor. "Check Your Head" starts off like one of those poignant ballads with acoustic guitars under smooth vocals. The pace picks up as vocalist Josh Todd gets into how your life could be worse.

Buckcherry infuses some bluesy tones and virtuoso style soloing into "Dirty Mind." When this album came out back in 1999, the rock power ballad was pretty much dead. "For the Movies" took me right back to that time with it's slow, emotional verses, and powerful choruses. Even though the lyrical content has been done ad nauseam, the musical arrangement still moves me. "Borderline" also has a blues swagger to it that compliments Todd's cock-sure delivery perfectly. Guitarist Keith Nelson puts his wah-wah pedal to good use on "Get Back."

The bonus DVD included gives you all of Buckcherry's videos that were released for the album; "Lit Up," "For the Movies," "Check Your Head," and "Dead Again." In addition to that, three live performances from the Viper Room, as well as an alternate version of "For the Movies." But that's not all. 2 unreleased audio tracks, "Late Nights in Voodoo" and "Flashback 69," and a live version of "Lit Up" from Woodstock '99 are also included.

The Bad

And for the third and final's a cash in. The band probably won't see a dime.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm lit up February 25, 2005
Format:Audio CD
This CD, this band is amazing. In a musical landscape filled with boy bands and hip hop, Buckcherry blazes brightly. They dare you to ignore them...and if you do, you do so at your own risk. If the first track "Lit Up" doesn't make you get off the couch, gnash your teeth, and play savage air guitar, then call the mortician...'cause you're dead.

5.0 out of 5 stars buckcherry 1st reissue January 11, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I love these guys, great reissue with a dvd If you have the first album already you'll still want this for the dvd, which has there video's + some live stuff. Packaging is pretty much the same, my only complaint is that they should have put some bonus tracks on the cd, there's a couple on the dvd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buckcherry revives guitar driven, blues rock. December 28, 1999
Format:Audio CD
Buckcherry's first record proves that the guitar is not dead and, in fact, is making a definitive comeback. With their guitar driven rythems and the tenacity of Josh Todd's vocals, it reminds me of what rock and roll used to be, hard and with attitude. Buckcherry, you could say, is a cross between the Black Crows and Guns and Roses. I hate to typeface bands, but others need a comparison. Just about every track is well written with the height of the recording being Dirty Mind, with it's wonderfully written guitar rythem and solo. It has the hard edge that most bands now a day stay away from, but with a blues edge. Buckcherry has again re-entered the guitar driven, blues rock with an edge that hasn't been around since the day's Axl Rose was storming off stage in a huff over the champaigne that was delivered to his dressing room. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's About Time! July 5, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Like the title of the review says, it's about time we got some flat-out rock n' roll. Buckcherry's music is a bluesy metal sound in the likes of Guns n' Roses and AC/DC, which may explain their nabbing of the opening spot on AC/DC's 2001 tour. Buckcherry's 1999 self-titled debut was one of the best albums of the year and is certainly a welcome addition to today's music. The first track off the album was also the first single off the album, the drug theme song Lit Up. The song has an excellent blusey rock sound, and although many people may not care for the lyrics, it's still an awesome song musically. Next up we get two awesome, straight rockers, Crushed and Dead Again. Check Your Head was the third single put out from this album, but didn't do too well on radio or tv play. Next up is Dirty Mind, this is a really heavy rocker, with an excellent solo by guitarist Keith Nelson. Next is the hit single For the Movies. This is the best song on the album and also my personal favorite Buckcherry song. The song is a litle mellower than most on the album, but the guitar playing is awesome, and this song proves Joshua Todd can actualyl sing once and a while. Lawless and Lulu and Related are the next two songs up on the album, and again they are just straight rockers, like much of the album. Same goes for the next track, Get Back. Up next is Baby, which starts off heavy, then turns into more of a mellower rocker. The album closes out with another solid rocker, Drink the Water. All in all, this album is amazing, and I recommend it to everyone. Along with this amazing debut, I also suggest checking out Buckcherry's 2001 release Time Bomb, which is just as amazing as this. Thank you Buckcherry for providing us with some flat-out awesome rock n' roll.
