I'm a professional remodeler. I carry all my essential tools in my bucket. It's my basic toolbox with those everyday items I reach for over and over -- some carpentry tools, some plumbing tools, some electrical tools, drywall, tiling, etc. I don't like to wear a toolbelt, so I keep the bucket close at hand as my de facto toolbelt. (My Duluth Trading Firehose pants have enough pockets to hold the tools I use at any given moment).

I was pretty happy with my last bucket organizer and haven't seen a better one in any of the stores, but it began to wear-out and I figured I'd best replace it before small items vanished through the holes in the bottom of the pockets. I was a bit torn between getting this organizer or its less-expensive sibling, but decided on this one due to the additional pockets and durability. I've begun to use it and am very pleased with it.

For starters, it's tough. The fabric feels indestructible. Even the "junk drawer" accessory bag has mesh reinforcement in the plastic so that even if a screw punctures the clear vinyl, it isn't going to rip apart. The rubber coating in key areas perfectly addresses the wear patterns I noted in my old organizer.

The array of pockets is well-considered. Especially welcomed are all the pockets on the INSIDE of the bucket. I've never seen so many and they help keep the bucket from becoming a "trash dump". I keep the items less-frequently used in these pockets and reserve the exterior ones for screwdrivers, pliers and other tools that I reach for most frequently.

I confess that I really wish I could will myself to work less and golf more. While I still fail miserably at progressing in such rehabilitation, I do enjoy knowing that this thing has a rain hood tucked away so that when I need to keep things dry, I can pretend that I'm really covering my drivers and irons. :-)

Like most people I know, I'm not as good about using my safety glasses as I should be, but I think having convenient, at-hand access to the pocket in this organizer that holds and protects the glasses will encourage me to use them more. The metal clip right at the top for a tape measure is also great and ends the ritual of having to empty half the bucket to dig the tape out from the bottom.

I only have a couple of thoughts on how to improve this item. First, it could use better storage for pencils, nail sets, pens and other long, slender objects. It has some, but there are not quite enough of these for my needs. Also, the little pockets it does have should be either a little deeper or further down the side of the bucket so these items don't stick up quite as much. Similarly, none of the pockets are open at the bottom. I.e., there aren't any loops. There are pockets to hold the screwdrivers, but I'd also like some simple loops for such tools. Lastly, I find that with my bucket, my handle doesn't have much freedom of motion. The top organizer sits low and solidly enough over the ends of the handle to prevent it from fully laying down on either side. This probably doesn't matter at all to anyone, but I offer it as a simple observation.

All in all, this is a really excellent product. Buy this one and not the cheaper one if you plan on seeing it used much.

UPDATE 10/15/2010 - after nearly three years I'm ready for a new one. Except for the 'junk drawer' bag (which is pretty well punctured and dying), the Boss is still doing pretty well after bouncing around every day in the back of my truck, overloaded with all manner of sharp objects. Unfortunately, a bottle of glue overturned in it and cemented some of my tools in such that I needed a razor to extract them. Bye bye, Bucket Boss #1, hello new Boss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!! Quality +, February 9, 2005

Amazing quality and a lot of storage. I also inserted into the bottom of the bucket, the parachute organizer and wow...what a sweet set-up this made. When I'm workin' the ranch I sometimes need a gun nearby for rattlesnakes, and there was even a pocket on this caddy that accomodated my Colt 45...I'm ordering one for a friend as a gift...

I bought this as a birthday present for my husband. Based on the photo, I thought the bucket was included (it is not - you can buy one for $5 on amazon to go with it). Once we got a 4.5 gallon bucket and he set it up, my husband really liked the Fat Back organizer. It holds all those odds & ends that are normally strewn all over the floor when projects are going on. The fabric is very sturdy and should hold up well over time. The organizer has lots of compartments of various sizes for wrenches, hammers, nuts & bolts, etc. I would recommend it for the handy man or woman!

This is a tough product and seems well made, but there are serious design issues that make this product a failure for anyone using it.

1: Drill Holder - My 18v Dewalt XRP drill will not fit into the drill holder with the button snapped closed. So, the drill hangs there waiting to fall out of the sleeve, if I move the bucket. I wonder how many other drills will not fit into the drill holder.

2: Screwdriver Storage - There are no proper screwdriver slots. All of the slots and pockets are closed on the bottom. This means that your screwdrivers will hang high over the slots, instead of fitting snug. Screwdrivers will most likely be lost on any job site, if the pockets are used.

3: Way too expensivve - This product is worth $15 max, with its design flaws.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bucket Boss Rocks, July 9, 2006
This review is from: Bucket Boss Extreme Gear 01064 Fatback Bucket Organizer (Tools & Home Improvement)
As usual Bucket Boss comes out with another awesome product. Tough as nails and with enough pockes to hold almost my entire tool chest full of tools. I am 100% pleased with the product but I later found out I could have gotten it cheaper from a local store and without the shipping cost as well. All and all If you find it in your area you can save up to $15.00, and if not it's still worth getting from amazon

I have shopped around and have not found a better more practical bucket tool organizer! This thing kicks rear end. I can put a little of just about everything I need in this organizer. More pockets than I knew what to do with, but hey, I filled them all! Now I just wish 5-Gallon buckets came with heavy duty handles! The 0.1265" thick wire (just a few hairs over 1/8th inch) that is used on a majority of 5-Gallon buckets is a bit weak for everything this organizer is capable of holding! The "Bucket Boss" Handle grip helps, but only with hand fatigue, not wire strength. Most of the Home Depot & Lowe's buckets are .126" wire and 70 mil plastic.

The bucket I have right now is the strongest one I could find. .128" thick wire handle and 75 mils thick plastic. See Link Below!

5 Gallon Bucket (Black)

Bucket Boss needs to sell a Bucket with big enough (stones) to match this awesome organizer! :)

The only Con I can think of is the price has jumped $10 since I purchased this in June;

Tons of pockets of different sizes and depths, I'm a door installer so mine carries a Makita 18 volt cordless drill(not in the holster on the side but just in the bucket), hammer, 4 chisels and a bunch of hand tools. I like the tape measure clip, I discarded the rainfly right out of the bag because I only use it indoors. Bottom line is I don't regret buying this and I'm not left wishing there was more pockets

4.0 out of 5 stars Extraodinarily sturdy. Outside pockets are better than the inside ones, August 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bucket Boss Extreme Gear 01064 Fatback Bucket Organizer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've seen these bucket organizers everywhere now and they are useful. This is the sturdiest of all that I've seen. As the picture shows, you can put lots of things into the pockets - not necessarily the best idea. However, the inside pockets are wide and shallow like the outside pockets, much different than suggested by the picture. (The outside pockets do look the same as the picture.)

For awhile bucket organizers were being strategically placed in the suggested-sell areas of home improvement retail stores. I've also seen conventional toolbox-shaped organizers made of the same material. I like the plastic bucket combo because it can be set on wet surfaces without worry, although some other types have plastic bottoms. I now use my old traditional steel toolbox to store small parts.

The hard 5-gallon bucket can be purchased for just under three bucks - I got an orange one at a big box store. The immediate issue is these buckets have a very thin handle. That's why Bucket Boss provides a bucket grip, which I elected not to get. Instead I wrapped tube-foam around the handle and taped over that with thick electrical tape. Tube-shaped foam is really cheap and can be purchased at a hardware store, and I had some anyway.

Overall, this organizer is durable and a big improvement over other methods I've used to tote tools for specific jobs. The pockets tend to be shallow and wide. It's not ideal for organizing several screwdrivers in my opinion. This won't be a problem if you only use two or three screwdrivers.

I think the inside should have included instead thin deep pockets for things like pens and pencils, and also thin narrow pockets for things like a magnetic stud finder or other things of that general shape. Too much space is devoted to wide-mouth pockets, in my view. Also, more thin pockets on the inside would have left sufficient room for things that plainly go inside the bucket like work gloves (which get dirty sometimes), a hammer, caulk gun, caulk tubes, and so on. There are always things you'd want to drop inside the bucket including long tools that cannot fit into any of the pockets.

More observations: No hammer holder. No loops or slats for screwdrivers. The one I got does not have these things on the inside, although it has other things there. My drill didn't fit into the patented drill holder but that large pocket is useful for other things.

I believe the reason to buy this bucket holder is because it's sturdier than others, period. Warning: It's possible to weigh this one down with many things not needed for specific jobs. I did it. The tendency is to fill up those pockets for storing lots of tools.

After using this organizer for awhile, I got two lower end units at a local store (cheaply too) and a buckets to put them on. Now I have three bucket organizers, and it works for me because I can put mostly the items I'm going to use for a purpose in the one I'm using. This is a good organizer, although I would have wanted something different for the inside pockets.

I do outdoor electrical work so I use pliers, Diagonal pliers, ratchets, sockets, knife, battery impact drill, large screw drivers, ruler, safety glasses and a hammer. Not so many small screw drivers or material. My battery impact drill (craftsman 19volt) fit the outside holster good, but after a week the drill started to fit sloppy -kept turning at a 90 degree angle to the bucket, so I decided to carry it inside the bucket. Several pockets on the outside to hold cell phone rubber gloves and sockets. Too many shallow pockets on the outside to hold long handle pliers.Material seems ok.
