BUCKINGHAM PALACE - (VISITOR'S GUIDE WITH A TOUR OF THE STATE ROOMS)-- PITKIN GUIDES, is written by Brian Hoey, a distinguished gentleman with many books on royalty to his credit. He writes in an extremely informative, easy-to-understand, yet always authoritave style. The print size is large, but not overly-so. The paper is of the very finest, and the binding of this large-format, but sadly far-too-short book, is sturdy stapling, which, unlike many other kinds of binding, will not come out or even be loosened, if the book is dropped! Stapling is one of the few advantages in a shorter book, and it is here appreciated greatly.
The REAL stars of this book, however, are the magnificent photos of Buckingham Palace within. Happily, (at least for me), these are mainly INTERIOUR photos. The inside of the rooms of Buckingham Palace are far less seen, in general ciculation, than the imposing facade of this Official London Residence of the British Monarch.
The picturs of the main rooms are mostly LARGE, and all are n colour. Pitkin Publications has been in buiness a VERY long time, and their older books are full of many more smaller, black and white photos. Many of their soft-covered 90-or so page publications dealt with specific members of the Royal Family, and had small text, to go with the myriad small pictures in their volumes. This more modern volume, however, has large, colour photos -- much fewer pictures than in the older, black-and-white photograph books, but far, for more imposing.
After an introductory page or two, is a full-page photograph of the Queen and Phrince Phillip, in full royal regalia, as if welcoming the visitor to their home. Rooms seen often in other books, and rooms seen rarely, a glimpse at the Palace Gardens, photos of the guilded State Coach, one of the Queen's antique china sets,
an urn, and a picture of the Grand Staircase, are some of the non-room photos within. The majoirty of photos ARE of the roooms of state -- and they are breathtakingly beautiful to behold.
Wit this book, (which IS an official guidebook, don't forget), are two pamplets. One is a guide to the various rooms and paintings in those rooms, which the those lucky enough to be able to go to the palace in actuality, can see. The other is a truly wonderful array of sophisticated and useful gifts -- from men's ties, to women's brooches and earrigns, to stationery, well-made mints, and a "desk-tidy", (desk organizer to Americans), in the shape of Buckingham Palace itself. These gifts are all of the very highest quality! Although it is listed that these goods are "A Collection Of Gifts Available Exclusively From The Buckingham Palace Garden Shop", I noticed that the publication date of the guidebook itself was 1993, and --although Buckingham Palace and everything inside of it is timeless -- I wondered if, during the almost 14 years since this book was published, (and it is in remarkably good condition -- quality DoES show!) -- well, if, prehaps, in those 14 yeass, whether at least SOME of this wonderous merchandise had "trickeled down" to places where people other than those who can actually visit Buckingham Palace can buy them.....like, perhaps, on Amazon.com? Well, the post-cards I wanted to buy are NOT on Amazon, nor is the magnificent Desk-Tidy. However, I WAS able to find an updated, DVD copy of the Buckingham Palace Official Video, which I eagerly await! One never knows how long a print advertisement may last....or how many people it may reach, thorugh the years. (I also "learnt by looking", from the two formats of the VHS then offered, that, before DVDs -- whcih come in (too many), formats, there were also two main formats of VHS -- PAL and NTSC, whch, upon research, I learnt were for use in Europe and North America, respecitively.
Twenty eight pages is not a lot. But the large-format of this book, the large brethtaking photogaphs, the wonderfully thick paper, and the deeply informative text by Mr. Hoey, make this book very satisyfing indeed. If your apartment is small, had you don't have room for many books, let THIS book be your book on Buckingham Palace. For beauty, information, easy-readabilty, and small storage space requirements, this book absolutely cannot be beat! { : )
