Thoroughly Tasty,

Branford and the cast play deep on every track. From the most soulful of ballads to the funkiest rendition of "Mona Lisas...", to the straight-ahead blowing from the horn section, to the way the rythmn section wraps around Maya Angelou's poetic verse on "Caged Bird", you'll have plenty to feast your ears on in each track. The musicianship is top-notch. And we out.

Jazz, Acid, Funk and House, but better,

A mix of acid jazz, funk, beautiful vocals, and spoken word blended together in a way that allows you to play it over and over without tiring of the sounds. Save one or two song oddities that I skip, I can play this from start to finish. It's consistent enough to enjoy the theme of the band all the way through, unlike some of the more disjointed funk/jazz albums I've heard lately.

Groundbreaking Recording,
By Peter John Hill "Peter" (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews

Truly amazing recording, the first outing of Branford Marsalis and a heavy-hitting cast of rappers, R&B singers, and DJ's, this album is a musical masterpiece. "Why the Cage Bird Sings" is an incredible song, in which Branford took a recoding of Maya Angelou speaking her poem, which I believe she one a Pulitzer for, and builds this incredible melody around it. The songs are different from each other in style, but all strong in their bond of musical genius.

The best 'fusion',

Finally someone who understands that jazz and rap DO mix! Branford Marsalis does some groundbreaking work with the right people around him. He has Elton John writing music for him and DJ Premier (from Gangstarr, if you like this PLEASE check them out, Branford would like it that way!) producing a lot. The following album, Music Evolution is a bit more commercial and 'easier' for Top-40 music lovers, but the hardcore music-fan should have them both.

Got this after hearing Angela Mayou on "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" - she and the band just blew me away! And the fact that Branford Marsalis is at the helm of this album is just that much more icing on the musical cake. There are a variety of musical flavors on this album and it's much better than I hoped for, having taken it on a "leap of faith" for just one song. Don't cheat yourself, this is good stuff. Not Bad But You Should Check Out Miles First,
By
This review is from: Buckshot Lefonque (Audio CD)
I like a few of the songs on this album (especially Some Cow Fonque) but if you like this then you should check out the real deal. Mile Davis was years ahead with his album Doo-Bop. In his wildest dreams Marsalis wouldn't have ever thought of doing an album like this if Miles hadn't already done it. Miles was way ahead of his time creating new musical genres before anyone could even imagine what he was thinking about.

No Pain, No Gain,

I saw buckshot lefonque at EMU a few years ago and they were great. Lots of energy and excellent music. The day after the concert I went and bought this CD. My favorite track is "No Pain, No Gain." This upbeat stuff may not cut it for the jazz traditionalist, but for those times that you want to hear jazz but need an adrenaline rush, this CD just might do it!

"I know why a cage Bird sings" is one of the most outstanding songs I've heard in years. It is smooth with clean well define movement. Beautiful note and excellent music manners. I can't seem to get passed this track (#3). I you hear it you will not be dissappointed. I purchase the CD for a friend and my son.

Wow! I found this cd to be very unique and cool. Its hip and jazzy. "Some Cow Fonque", my personal favorite, is fast and funky, while "Breakfast at Denny's" is good too. I'm also starting to get to enjoy all of the other songs as well. Its very likable.
