A Childhood Classic Can Now be Yours!,
By The Loved One "curiouser and curiouser!" (Lovely Southern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bucky O'Hare (Video Game)
This game brings back such great memories. It is one of my all time favorites. Basically, the premise is that you are Bucky O'Hare, captain of the Righteous Indignation S.P.A.C.E. ship. Bucky is the leader of a band of colorful and idiosyncratic freedom fighters struggling to keep the Aniverse (an alternate universe populated by anthropomorphic farm animals) from falling under the sway of the Toad warriors. In the game, the crew of the Righteous Indignation captured by the Toad Mother Ship, and only Bucky escapes. As Bucky, you must single handedly engage in an interplanetary rescue mission to retrieve your imprisoned comrades. Every time you clear a stage, your crewmates join you on your quest and each posses a specialized weapon, making the game especially cool. For instance, Bucky's weapon of choice is a "maser" gun that shoots standard pellets (a la Mega Man). Deadeye Duck the gunner, has a short range, shotgun-like weapon. Jenny, second in command, hurls concentrated blasts of psychic energy at her enemies, and so on. An even cooler aspect of the game is each character's unique special technique that you can use by charging it up with the "B" button. Given the variety of characters, weapons, and special technique, the game play stays fresh long after repeated plays. The landscape of the game itself is expertly crafted. In order to clear obstacles, a player must use both the power of skilled thumbs and razor-sharp puzzle solving skills. They tend to be tough, but nothing to lose sleep over: they are easy enough to clear with a try or two. Overall, this game is a great buy. This oldie shows that fancy graphics and overwrought soundtracks aren't the key to becoming a classic . . . spaceships and aliens are!

When this NES game came out, Bucky O'Hare was at its peak because of the TV series in 1991-92 and fans of the show was willing to get this game, but I regret on not buying it. I was hooked on other addicting Konami titles like Ninja Turtles 2 and 3 and frequently rented Tiny Toon Adventures, but I never ever saw this game in any of the Video Rental stores I visited. 16 years later, I came across it on amazon and I was thrilled. Even the cover art of the game wowed me!! Like any Konami or Ultra Soft licensed game for NES, the soundtrack and sound effects were awesome and the game play could'nt been better. Controls are very responsive (allowing you to fire your shots at many different angles). The color scheme was perfect and the graphics were decent for a 1991 8 bit game. The storyline was straight forward. Bucky O'Hare must rescue four of his crew members (Jenny, Willy, Dead Eye, and Blinky) from four different planets and then continue through Toad Air Marshall's monsterous ship (simular to the Mega Man series). You get to switch through different crew members during battle (like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Tiny Toon Adventures) with different abilities, by pressing select. Since this game was specifically targeted for kids and beginner players, the game makes up for the difficulty by allowing the player to continue infinite times from the last scene (not level) the player died and grants a password after each level is complete. I have yet finished the game, but I heard from the internet that there are no alternate endings or other special rewards so using a password is no big deal. I strongly suggest all gamers who still have their NES to get this game, if they do not already have it because its exciting, fun, and appropriate for all ages. If you love Ninja Turtles, Tiny Toons, Mega Man, and Contra, you will love this!!

Hands-down, this HAS to be one of the best titles ever made for NES for a myriad of reasons. I grew up with the show, and loved it, looked forward to it, yada yada. It was such a great show, and this game is hardly any less.
This game rocks in several ways. The graphics are sweet and varied, the gameplay/control is smooth and easy to understand/utilize, and you have several different characters to play with (five in all - Bucky, Jenny, Deadeye, Blinky, and Will) each with their own unique abilities and powers which come in handy. All of them have different projectile attacks, and Jenny had an especially cool one (you could move her energy sphere around, so you could hit an enemy on an upper platform) or Blinky or Deadeye to get rid of enemies below you due to their downward-aiming projectiles. The levels are fun and varied. The first part of the story is up to you (you have four planets, you choose the order in which you defeat them so you can rescue your teammates) before the game becomes linear and you progress through different parts of the toad mothership. And since there's so many levels, you have an password feature so you don't have to start all over every time you turn on the game. You also get the chance to increase your life-meter, though this is only temporary (game over, your life meter goes back to its original level which isn't that high to begin with) but still, this is a overall solid game with many cool features that made it one of NES' most playable games.

This game is naturally Nintendo hard which isn't uncommon all things considered NES tended to make hard games. This game gives you unlimited continues with a a draw back, you are allowed to have to life upgrades which increase your max life. Each time you continue your life gets reset to the default which isn't all that high comparatively. The game is hard but from what I can tell so far is manageable. All and all good game!
