Modern jazz piano begins here., July 20, 2011
This review is from: Bud Powell Trio (Audio CD)
Along with the first two volumes of "The Amazing Bud Powell" on Blue Note and the first disc of Verve's multidisc collection, this issue represents Bud Powell at his finest. The first eight tracks in particular, comprising Bud's first session under his own name in January, 1947, must have caused quite a stir among jazz pianists when they were first issued on 78 rpm; ever since then, until this CD reissue, they have been largely out of circulation and hard to obtain, albeit crucial to the history of jazz piano. All the defining characteristics of bop are here, cleanly and inimitably articulated by the trio.
The remaining tracks document Bud's working group at Birdland from 1953, perhaps the last year the pianist was capable of peak performance. Already one senses a lessening of the fire that informed the earlier session, though these are very good indeed, particularly the trio's take on "Embraceable You," which bears comparison to Charlie Parker's famous rendition.
I'm surprised to be the first reviewer here: this one is indispensable.
