The wild wild east!, October 3, 2000
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
Oh where to begin? Anybody who knows anything of the Global Underground series should have extremely high expectations of each new release and yet they continue to deliver each and every time. How do they do it? Lets take a look at the Global Underground Dj resume shall we? Let's see, Paul Oakenfold, Dave Seaman, John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha, John Digweed, Seb Fontaine Tony Devit, Anthony Pappa, and new to the group Danny Howells. Plus not to mention a little old trance dj who goes by the name of Nick Warren. Nick Warren is a GU veteran and he aims to please with this new addition to the series. It is a retrospective on a recent trip to Budapest and over there it would seem they like their trance HARD and bangin. This is exactly what Nick delivers with ease. To start off with the mix is flawless (I mean FLAWLESS!) the tracks are incredible, the production couldnt be better. If you do not have this album yet, why not? The track listing and selection is impeccable, each cd on this two cd album flows into the next on a smooth yet crashing ride to another world.
Disc number 1 is the more mellow of the two (but still hard as ever) and it is as emotional as any trance trip can be, it starts slow with Mara's "One" (remixed by Hamel) and it sort of eases you into the groove with it's slippery acid bass line and dreamlike vocals, it is the epitimy of bliss. Other stellar tracks on this disc include, Bedrock's remix of Danny Tenaglias' "Turn me on", Sandra Collins' "Flutterby", Origins' "Yellow" and it closes with Arcadiums' "Fade Instinct." (oh my god! thiat track sends shivers down my spine!)
Disc 2 is the harder of the two as I said before and it is nothing less then a spaceshuttle into euphoria. It opens with Purple Hazes' "Genetic", this is an emotional trance track I cannot get enough of. It's break down and build up sends one soaring and once it starts up again you won't stop listening until the whole disc is through. Like disc one this disc is a journey, I can't stress that enough. The tracks flow into each other as if they were all the same song, you often cannot tell the difference until you've looked at your stereo and checked to see what song it's on. This disc features Lsgs' "Shecan" which is more deep trance into the mix, a wonderful song it is almost haunting as it fly's into the next track which is Classified Projects' "Phenomenon" a more relaxing track for this disc it borders on acid house as it builds into a full trance onslaught. And don't miss Breeders' "Beetlejuice", a hypnotic track witch picks up the pace from where "Phenomenon" left off. This whole album from beggining to end is in a constant state of building and building. It never seems to lose it's pace. Each track is building and building until the release at the very end. just before the closing track of this album Nick throws in a track called "Lateral Horizon" by Mara. Which is a sort of goa/acid trancy last burst of energy before the slow dreamy ending. Everything closes out with Forths' "Secret Silence" an almost ambient piece it goes most of the track with out a beat only a hypnotic humming leaves you in awe and jealousy as you realize just how amazing this all must have been in Budapest.
I'm sure most of us didn't make it to those shows out there but this is the next best thing and believe me it is more than worth the price. You get your moneys' worth on the first track and each one after that will fill you with joy that this album is now in your collection. That's how I felt and I'm sure you will too.

Fast paced .. Party music?, October 10, 2004
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
Wow, this cd sure does have a lot of great ratings. You might go hmmm i wonder why. maybe i'll get that album. Not a bad choice because it is great, although..... this cd is very face paced, and a little repetetive. it does not go on any particular journey into deep trance, which maybe it wasn't trying to, maybe it was just trying to be fast hard beats. Now im not trying to critisize this album because it is great, but if you do buy it you may get bored because you'll want it to go deeper. You just know that Nick Warren can produce something more mind boggling than this. It's okay though. There is no cheese involved here and you may love it, but instead of buying it, if you can borrow it or download it, then you might see what it's like and not waste money if you don't like it.

excellent... i love this so much, August 19, 2001
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
after reading the other reviews i was expecting this cd to have monstrous synth pads as leads and stuff like that but its not like that. See.. i was expecting cheese... which this definitely is not. These tracks are all deep, and funky, and very trancey. Thats what we want! In my opinion both cds are absolutely fantastic, though i prefer the second one.. because its a little more upbeat. Some of these songs sound familiar to me.. because they were also released on other global underground releases, such as the "arrivals/departures/destinations" EPs. This is the second nick warren cd i own.. the other on is amsterdam. The great thing with nick warren is that he manages to sound different on these cds. I really appreciate a dj who find some time to be original and be open to new influences! This album is by all means not new... we are in 2001 now.. but what the heck.. it sounds so good. I just cant get enough of it. buy it now! 5 stars! woo hoo!
