5.0 out of 5 stars The wild wild east!, October 3, 2000
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
Oh where to begin? Anybody who knows anything of the Global Underground series should have extremely high expectations of each new release and yet they continue to deliver each and every time. How do they do it? Lets take a look at the Global Underground Dj resume shall we? Let's see, Paul Oakenfold, Dave Seaman, John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha, John Digweed, Seb Fontaine Tony Devit, Anthony Pappa, and new to the group Danny Howells. Plus not to mention a little old trance dj who goes by the name of Nick Warren. Nick Warren is a GU veteran and he aims to please with this new addition to the series. It is a retrospective on a recent trip to Budapest and over there it would seem they like their trance HARD and bangin. This is exactly what Nick delivers with ease. To start off with the mix is flawless (I mean FLAWLESS!) the tracks are incredible, the production couldnt be better. If you do not have this album yet, why not? The track listing and selection is impeccable, each cd on this two cd album flows into the next on a smooth yet crashing ride to another world.

Disc number 1 is the more mellow of the two (but still hard as ever) and it is as emotional as any trance trip can be, it starts slow with Mara's "One" (remixed by Hamel) and it sort of eases you into the groove with it's slippery acid bass line and dreamlike vocals, it is the epitimy of bliss. Other stellar tracks on this disc include, Bedrock's remix of Danny Tenaglias' "Turn me on", Sandra Collins' "Flutterby", Origins' "Yellow" and it closes with Arcadiums' "Fade Instinct." (oh my god! thiat track sends shivers down my spine!)

Disc 2 is the harder of the two as I said before and it is nothing less then a spaceshuttle into euphoria. It opens with Purple Hazes' "Genetic", this is an emotional trance track I cannot get enough of. It's break down and build up sends one soaring and once it starts up again you won't stop listening until the whole disc is through. Like disc one this disc is a journey, I can't stress that enough. The tracks flow into each other as if they were all the same song, you often cannot tell the difference until you've looked at your stereo and checked to see what song it's on. This disc features Lsgs' "Shecan" which is more deep trance into the mix, a wonderful song it is almost haunting as it fly's into the next track which is Classified Projects' "Phenomenon" a more relaxing track for this disc it borders on acid house as it builds into a full trance onslaught. And don't miss Breeders' "Beetlejuice", a hypnotic track witch picks up the pace from where "Phenomenon" left off. This whole album from beggining to end is in a constant state of building and building. It never seems to lose it's pace. Each track is building and building until the release at the very end. just before the closing track of this album Nick throws in a track called "Lateral Horizon" by Mara. Which is a sort of goa/acid trancy last burst of energy before the slow dreamy ending. Everything closes out with Forths' "Secret Silence" an almost ambient piece it goes most of the track with out a beat only a hypnotic humming leaves you in awe and jealousy as you realize just how amazing this all must have been in Budapest.

I'm sure most of us didn't make it to those shows out there but this is the next best thing and believe me it is more than worth the price. You get your moneys' worth on the first track and each one after that will fill you with joy that this album is now in your collection. That's how I felt and I'm sure you will too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced .. Party music?, October 10, 2004

Wow, this cd sure does have a lot of great ratings. You might go hmmm i wonder why. maybe i'll get that album. Not a bad choice because it is great, although..... this cd is very face paced, and a little repetetive. it does not go on any particular journey into deep trance, which maybe it wasn't trying to, maybe it was just trying to be fast hard beats. Now im not trying to critisize this album because it is great, but if you do buy it you may get bored because you'll want it to go deeper. You just know that Nick Warren can produce something more mind boggling than this. It's okay though. There is no cheese involved here and you may love it, but instead of buying it, if you can borrow it or download it, then you might see what it's like and not waste money if you don't like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent... i love this so much, August 19, 2001

after reading the other reviews i was expecting this cd to have monstrous synth pads as leads and stuff like that but its not like that. See.. i was expecting cheese... which this definitely is not. These tracks are all deep, and funky, and very trancey. Thats what we want! In my opinion both cds are absolutely fantastic, though i prefer the second one.. because its a little more upbeat. Some of these songs sound familiar to me.. because they were also released on other global underground releases, such as the "arrivals/departures/destinations" EPs. This is the second nick warren cd i own.. the other on is amsterdam. The great thing with nick warren is that he manages to sound different on these cds. I really appreciate a dj who find some time to be original and be open to new influences! This album is by all means not new... we are in 2001 now.. but what the heck.. it sounds so good. I just cant get enough of it. buy it now! 5 stars! woo hoo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Global Underground Classic, May 13, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
I'm not usually one to review CDs, but I felt that putting a blurb about this one would be worthwhile... As a owner of well over 200 electronic music CDs (and having heard plenty more that I feel aren't worth owning), this compilation is clearly one of the best in my collection.

I was recently doing some yearly collection cleaning, and when I popped both of these discs in, I was truly blown away. This stuff is approaching 4 years in age now, and it still absolutely slams by todays standards. Both discs just offer up great track after great track, and keep going. You will not regret getting your hands on this one...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nick Warren Storms The Capital of Hungary With This GU Mix, January 29, 2003
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
I own all the GU series releases and I've listened to all of them many times over BUT this is MAGIC from one of the GREATEST DJ's in the world. Nick Warren means business here. It is an absolute instant classic. One which never sounds out of date and one which withstands the test of time. CD1 features classics such as Mara's "The One", Timo Maas Vs Ian Wilkie's "Twin Town" which Nick has mixed brilliantly and Armin's "Virgo". CD1 builds up very fast and continues its fast pace into CD2, which in my opinion becomes even better, including LSG's "Shecan", Z2's brilliant and aweosome "I Want You", Life On Mars' "Life In Minds" and Purple Haze's "Genetic" which sets the pace of CD2.

Nick warren is going round the PLANET OF PROGRESSIVE TRANCE/HOUSE here and invites you to join the ride with him. I've taken the ride many times over and everytime I listen to this beautifully mixed compilation, I find myself with the PERFECT LANDING into the heart of Trance. Simply The Best and head and shoulders Above The Rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Progressive Trance at it's best, July 21, 2002
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
Nick Warren never fails to produce a commercially available CD that tends to be a cut above the rest. His sound, whether it be the rest of his GU releases, his Way Out West project, or Back To Mine, remains intensely forward-thinking. From the explosive beginning of the first CD to his characteristic spacey ending of the second CD, Warren builds up a trance demon that is not laden with cheesy synths or overtly angelic female vocals. These two CDs are what progressive trance is all about: well-composed melodies with variations among beats and wild, ever-variant basslines. Listening to it once is not enough and each and every track shows you why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Trance mixed by perhaps the best DJ outthere, August 14, 2008
By
Filip Galiza (Pittsburgh, PA USA) - See all my reviews

Warren is a Consistently solid DJ who has always stuck to a style of trance that is deep, thoughtful, energizing and a little bit off the beaten path. His mixes are consistently top of the line and even when he dives and uses IDM or other electronica styles, the CDs always come out sounding great.

This is a two CD mix that carries a dark type of energy. Each track here is truly superb and carries a ton of raw energy. Warrens planning and mixing is solid ultimately giving you a mix of very classic tracks that feels timeless. Its raw, aggressive and passionate mixing like this that will keep you listening to both of the discs for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars very well done, April 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
If I said that this record was one of the best trance compilations that I've heard, that would probably be meaningless to you, since an opinion is at best, subjective. So let me give you a list of records that I consider to be top quality, and if you agree with me on this list, you'll probably agree with me on Budapest :) Danny Howells - Nocturnal Frequencies ii & Nu Breed Steve Lawler - Nu Breed /Dark Drums Digweed - GU 6 and 19 Dave Seaman - everything except for Renaissance America (get his Renaissance 4 mix with Ian Ossia if you can - a great record that) Lucien Foort - Singularity ii. These records aren't similar to Budapest at all, but if you've got the above records and enjoy them, then you'll probably enjoy the superior track selection and mixing on this one. Warren seems to attract a lot of flak, but I started listening to him just a few weeks ago (when I got a copy of Amsterdam), and I've temporarily put my Danny Howells CDs back on the shelf...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another awesome set from Nick Warren - very hard & trippy, March 28, 2001
This review is from: Budapest (Audio CD)
This is a great set of discs. Disc 1 is a little less hard, but it is still banging - disc 2 is totally out of control, play it loud and you feel transported to another world! These discs go great with the lights out and non-sobriety. If you already own any of Nick's work - then you know it's a no brainer to get more from the best DJ around (besides Paul O). If you have never listened to Nick, then get this or the Brazil set - which is also awesome.

Another blinding display of musical wizardry by the global underground crew. For 7 years these lads have blown several sets of my speakers & as many fuses in my amps as i care to remember, but what the hell, at the end of the day my ears have become so acoustomed to the sound of all the global series that the only time i shall not listen to them is when i discover that in completly deaf.so in a short note, do your thing & get hooked up with this crew & don't miss a relise.
