Editorial Reviews

Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was one of modern music's true innovators. The owner of a remarkable four-and-one-half octave vocal range, he employed idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist lyrics and an unholy alliance of free jazz, Delta blues, latter-day classical music and rock & roll to create a singular body of work virtually unrivalled in its daring and fluid creativity. 12 tracks inall. BMG. 2006.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Place To Start.... August 21, 2006
Format:Audio CD
All the signs point to a renewed interest in the music of the good Captain, and it's very welcome!!! Combining elements of the blues, free jazz, and his own unique personal musical vision, Mr. Van Vliet is one of the few artists that the term "true original" completely applies to. This CD is an excellent place for the uninitiated or curious to start. Hard core Beefheads will try to steer you to Trout Mask Replica, but that symphony is for the already converted. This disk cherry-picks the best of the early Captain and gets you ready for the more adventurous discs (Replica, Shiny Beast, Doc At The Radar Station) in his canon. Spread The Word!!!

The Buddah Years
The quality of the CD was very good as described (used). The CD itself was good if you like Zappaistic lyrics. It has many shining points but doesn't seem to be as consistent as his other albums. I give it a 5 out of an overall 10.
