Book Description

April 3, 2007 Buddha (Book 6)
In the sixth volume of manga visionary Osamu Tezuka's Buddha, the devil Mara possesses the bandit Ananda, half-brother of Devadatta, in an effort to eliminate the Buddha. A ruthless killer who is impervious to physical harm, Ananda will retain the devil's favor only if he spurns his love interest.

When Ananda and his bandit buddy attack the Fire Shrine of the Brahmin brothers Kassapa, it is none other than the Awakened One who happens by. Buddha must confront his eternal enemy, Mara, before he can open the eyes of arrogant priests and hardened criminals.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Infused with humor and history, the epic of Siddhartha is perhaps Osamu Tezuka's crowning acheivement and illustrates why, without irony, Tezuka is referred to as 'The King of Japanese Comics'." - LA Weekly"Buddha is one of Tezuka's true masterpieces. We're lucky to have this excellent new edition in English." - Scott McCloud, author of Understanding Comics"In handsome volumes designed by Chip Kidd, the Vertical books present Tezuka at his best." - National Post

"Buddha is an engrossing tale. The armchair philosopher, the devout Buddhist, the casual manga fan - this book satisfies all with its tale of humanism through sequential art, and definitely earns its place on a bibliophile's bookshelf." -Anime Insider"This is one of the greatest acheivements of the comics medium, a masterpiece by one of the greats." -Artbomb.net"In Tezuka's world, the exquisite collapses into the goofy in a New York minute, the goofy into the melodramatic, the melodramatic into the brutal, and the brutal into the sincerely touching. The suprising result is a work wholly unique and downright fun." -Time Out NY"Tezuka's Buddha is a striking and memorable confluence of ancient wisdom and contemporary popular art." -Yoga Journal

About the Author

Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. His many early masterpieces include the series known in the U.S. as Astro Boy. With his sweeping vision, deftly interwined plots, feel for the workings of power, and indefatigable commitment to human dignity, Tezuka elevated manga to an art form. The later Tezuka, when he authored Buddha, often had in mind the mature readership that manga gained in the sixties and that had only grown ever since. The Kurosawa of Japanese pop culture, Osamu Tezuka is a twentieth century classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fight for the Soul, December 26, 2009
By
Jesse Haller (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Buddha: Volume 6: Ananda (Paperback)
This volume is mostly about Ananda, who as a boy was given to a demon by his father in order to save himself from invaders. The demon possesses the boy making him indestructible. After the death of his father, and watching his mother get killed, Ananda embraces the life of a bandit. When he comes face-to-face with the demon that possesses, and protects him, Amanda learns it's because she (the demon) wants him to kill Buddha. When the Buddha encounters him, Buddha enters into a battle for Ananda's soul.

This is a good entry in the series. It's much darker in tone then other volumes, as the subject matter would suggest. The message of the book is, no matter how much bad has been done, there is always redemption. All beings have cause suffering, some have caused more. But with the Buddha's teachings, one can over come these past deeds.

5.0 out of 5 stars more buddha manga, October 30, 2011

This review is from: Buddha: Volume 6: Ananda (Paperback)
I don't have a review for this volume in particular. I read the whole series at once, and the volumes were just a detail.

I love the entire series. It is a somewhat simplistic view of the Buddha, but it makes up for that by mystical interpretations of well know events.

I recommend the series highly.
