DISCOVER THE BUDDHA,
By A Customer
This review is from: Buddha Discovery Deck: 53 Sutras and Meditation Cards to Create a Silent Space Within (Hardcover)
A wonderful introduction into a basic understanding of Buddha. The cards in this deck are great meditation tools - one for each week of the year. Osho brings a contemporary freshness and understanding to a special selection of sutras, taken from Buddha's main work THE DHAMMAPADA. I can recommend this title as a gift for the upcoming holiday season.

This review is from: Buddha Discovery Deck: 53 Sutras and Meditation Cards to Create a Silent Space Within (Hardcover)
The cards are nice but the first 34 pages which include the introduction, history of the Buddha and the Sutras leave much to be desired. I'm not arguing with what the author is saying, it is his method of delivery that I found to be a turn off. It approached pontification and reminded me of the religious dogma that is blindly accepted by too any in our prejudiced society. After reading a few pages, I put the book down very disappointed. I decided to give it another try because I didn't want to waste an opportunity to learn something but couldn't get through it. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I wouldn't even give it away, I guess it will sit on my shelf until I can find some way to use the cards.

BEAUTIFULLY INSPIRATIONAL,

I love to use this deck - I draw a card to be my 'meditation'
for the week. Each card has a nice picture and a short inspirational phrase on the front. Then, on the back of the card is expanded text if I want more clarification on the inspirational phrase. And if I want more, there is a longer text for each card within the book. I don't see the book as a text to be read cover to cover, but rather as a support for the deck of cards. Enjoy this for years, and it makes a wonderful gift for anyone interested in Buddha, Osho, enlightenment, peace, meditation and/or self-realization.

It is what it is. The deck holds true to it's title and intent. It is the "Buddha Discovery Deck. 53 Sutras and meditation cards to create a silent space within". I have usesd it as it instructed me and I really like it. I take a card per week and I use it as a Gatha and I find lessons in it bring about great equinimity.
Noting from what others have written, they seem to expected more. I think someone who is a serious student of Buddhism, may find it disappointing, because they are expecting something along their traditional training. I am a Westerner and have not had traditional Buddist training. My recommendation, is to be open to what is there. If you are from a traditional Buddhist background, then open your mind to a different approach. May you all be well.

Deep and profound deck for self-exploration,
By Bodhi Heeren (Copenhagen) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Buddha Discovery Deck: 53 Sutras and Meditation Cards to Create a Silent Space Within (Hardcover)
This very beautiful and aesthetic set of cards represents an important meeting between two spiritual giants Buddha and Osho, seperated by 2.500 years on one level, but united on another level in the eternal Now. Each card is decorated with a picture related to buddhism: the head of a statue, a temple and the like, and contains a quote from the profound buddhist scripture The Dhammapada and Osho's equally profound comments.
The accompanying booklet deepens the quotes and give suggestions on how to work with the cards and their insights in your everyday life. This deck of cards can transform your life!

Nothing to do with Buddhism,
By Hoke (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Buddha Discovery Deck: 53 Sutras and Meditation Cards to Create a Silent Space Within (Hardcover)
Buddhism is founded on the teachings of the Buddha or "Enlightened One". He taught that there are 4 noble truths to Buddhism. These are: There is suffering; The source of suffering is desire; There is cessation to suffering, And that cessation is achieved through an adherence to the Eightfold Path. The Eightfold Path is a path of virtue, mental cultivation, and wisdom.
I quoted the above from my Let's Go guidebook. Nowhere within this set will you learn about Buddha's life or his teachings. That includes the foundation of Buddhism that I included above. The Sutra's are correct however the interpretations stray from most of Buddha's teachings. If you want to get the author's view of Buddhism here it is: Stare at Buddha images and let your mind go blank. Buddhism is meditation and anyone can become a Buddha. That has got to be the most flawed and simplistic view of a such a great religion/philosophy that I have ever heard. I was highly disappointed after purchasing this set. I wanted to learn about the Buddhist beliefs because that is what life is centered around in Thailand, my home for the next 2 years. As I just demonstrated my guidebook does a much better job of accurately explaining Buddhist beliefs. This set preaches a very hateful message that has nothing to do with the Buddhism that I have learned about. It is very critical of any religious beliefs outside of Buddhism. True Buddhism is very inclusive and allows people of all faiths to incorporate the teachings of the Buddha. Going from my experiences living in Thailand so far I have found virtually no value to what is taught in this set. We have had Buddhist Monks come and speak to us on Buddhism and what they said differed from this set greatly. Also readings of other texts and discussions with devout and less than devout Buddhists shared nothing with what this author presents. |
