About the Author

William Woodville Rockhill (1854-1914) was an American traveler, diplomat and author. Between 1888 and 1892 he explored parts of China and Tibet. He had several lengthy conversations with Dalai Lama in 1908. Rockhill was also a pioneering Orientlist who uncovered and translated ancient Chinese and Tibetan classics, He wrote many books and articles that depicted the physical landscape and sought to understand Asian Societies. His books included The Life of the Buddha (1884) and The Lands of the Lamas (1891). --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.
