Book Description

May 15, 2012
Buddha & Love, published in over half a dozen languages, explores all aspects of love and partnership from a Buddhist perspective. Covering a broad spectrum of topics such as sexuality, infidelity, parenting, and divorce. Lama Ole Nydahl, a Buddhist Lama in the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, explains how a Buddhist approach to relationships can help us to relax our minds, break bad habits, and use relationships to grow ourselves and benefit everyone around us. Unafraid of taboo topics, and free from sappy cliches and political correctness, Nydahl provides modern people with practical advice on how to love better.

More About the Author

Lama Ole Nydahl is one of the few Westerners fully qualified as a lama and meditation teacher in the Karma Kagyu Buddhist tradition.

In 1969, Ole Nydahl and his wife Hannah became the first Western students of H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. After completing three years of Buddhist philosophy studies and intensive meditation training - including the transmission for a unique Diamond Way Buddhist practice called Conscious Dying (tib. Phowa) - Ole Nydahl began teaching Buddhism in Europe at the request of the 16th Karmapa.

Lama Ole has since transmitted the blessing of the lineage in a different city nearly every day, traveling and teaching worldwide. His depth of knowledge and dynamic teachings inspire thousands of people at his lectures and meditation retreats.

Lama Ole has been a major driving force in bringing Buddhism to the West, and to date has established more than 627 Diamond Way Buddhist centersin 44 countries around the world. His unique synthesis of modern style and ancient wisdom helped create the largest body of students practicing Diamond Way Buddhist methods in the West.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to Think Like a Buddhist May 12, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ole Nydahl is a Buddhist teacher who lived for four years in relative hardship in the Himalayas and became a close disciple of a legendary (no exaggeration) Tibetan Buddhist teacher called "the Sixteenth Karmapa." The Sixteenth Karmapa died in 1981 but sent Ole Nydahl and his wife to the west to start Buddhist centers in his name. Since then he's started around six hundred of them.

My understanding is he typically circles the globe twice a year on a never-ending pilgrimage, spending time in each of the centers he's started. In all that time and in all those different hemispheres you can imagine how many people he's met and talked to, how many couple relationships he's seen in various stages of getting together, staying together, or flying apart. So, I'd say it's the synthesis of all that human observation you get by reading this.

That's the lens you're looking through when you open this book.

To me, even though I've been in the same relationship for many years, it felt like an eagle's-eye-view of human interactions, like gliding overhead observing the big picture. He's obviously seen everything, heard everything, and thought about it all deeply.

If it seems odd reading about pair-bonding from a tradition that seems to encourage celibacy maybe it makes more sense to think about it in terms of the profound understanding of the mind Tibetan Buddhism represents. I mean, after all, they knew about the subconscious mind a thousand years before Freud (and they call it the "store consciousness" because everything is stored there). I just offer that as an example of the depth of Buddhist psychology.

On that basis alone, aren't you a little curious about what they have to say about relationships?

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for practical people May 14, 2012
By Maarten
Format:Hardcover
The book is unique in a sense that it is probably the first ever Buddhist book that takes on a practical approach to love relationships. Absent of moral restrictions and dogmas, Ole Nydahl presents the Buddhist view on how to make relationships, once the initial excitement of attraction has passed, a source of inspiration and happiness for all involved.

Unlike other Buddhist books on relationships which tend to be either theoretical, moralistic or too exotic, the situations in this book are easy to recognize. Ole Nydahl's vaste experience with Buddhist teachings and as well as love changes your perspective and the way you handle these situations to the benefit of all involved.

I have read an earlier version of the book in Dutch and it is one of the best Buddhist books I have ever read. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on partnership I know! May 15, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I've read the German version of this book, and it was the best book on partnership I've ever read. It goes way beyond the usual "Mars/Venus" story and really helps you to understand your partner in a more deeply and profound way you could have imagined. Not only that, the book also gives advice on how to actually learn from each other, how to open for each other's qualities, and become a good team.
The book is also great for people who want to learn something about Buddhism, because it gives a short introduction to the Buddha's teachings. For those who do already know the teachings, you will also enjoy reading this book, because all information is streamlined for the relationship-topic. I think both Buddhists and non-Buddhists will have great benefit from reading this book on many levels.

Is there a more intense experience than love? In Buddhism, love and partnership are considered to be a basis for personal development, spiritual growth and a fulfilled life.

Lama Ole Nydahl describes in an impressive way what Buddha advised for living a relationship in a way that both the couple itself as well as its surroundings enter a state of happiness and fulfillment. The book gives practical advice on how to reach what is a dream to many: a harmonious, strong relationship and a life fulfilled by lasting happiness that no one can take away!
