Bollywood tackles the Buddha!,

This 26-episode religious epic, made for Hindi television, tells the story of how the Buddha became the Buddha. Watching it was my first experience with Bollywood's unique filmmaking aesthetic. By Western standards, it's a pretty dismal affair. A tedious, mawkish script is piously recited by wooden actors wearing outrageous costumes and bad makeup. Despite several songs and lively dance numbers, the tone is unrelentingly serious, which makes for some delightful moments of unintentional humor. The scene in which Dipankar Buddha is practically smothered with half-dead flowers will have you rolling on the floor ... and wait till you see the Gods leering at the belly dancers in Heaven! English subtitles are provided, although there are dozens of grievous mispellings and formatting errors.
Still, I have to admit that I admired this production and found it fascinating to watch. It has an air of thoughtfulness and sincerity you don't find in Hollywood films anymore. There's not a trace of Western cynicism. If you like Cecil B. DeMille's productions of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, and are curious about the Buddha, you might want to get a look at this. |
