Stalks have swollen nodes on this unique clump-forming bamboo. Swelling more apparent when plant is stressed due to dry soil or when contained. Rich green foliage held in whorls. Excellent screen or windbreak, handsome in containers. Full sun. Evergreen. When contained, to 5 to 7 feet tall; naturalized it is a vigorous grower to 35 to 45 feet and more tall. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Hardy to USDA zone 9. Greater with added protection.
