Book Description

March 31, 2006
Buddhism and Peace: Theory and Practice is among the most comprehensive books on this topic to date. Of the seven international seminars on Buddhism and Leadership for Peace, which have gained worldwide reputation in leading discussions on Buddhism and peace, the seventh seminar was the most successful. Thirty-one eminent scholars and activists among the more than forty participants presented papers on Buddhism and peace from the varying perspectives of their expertise. The two major Buddhist traditions, the Theravada and the Mahayana, are equally represented in this book. Likewise, a balance is struck in this book in terms of the number of articles dealing with theory and those concentrating on practice. The result is a collection of essential readings on the application of Buddhist wisdom for peace activists, scholars of religion, social scientists, and others in these troubled times, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This volume should prove illuminating both to practitioners and scholars of Buddhism who may not have schooled themselves on this particular perspective on the tradition and to people around the world who are personally and collectively involved in one or another phase of te peace initiative, as well as to, the general educated reader who is interested in learning what Buddhism has to contribute to the human striving toward world peace. --J. Bruce Long, Hsi Lai Journal of Humanstic Buddhism 8 (2007): 371-373

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book which discusses on Buddhism and peace in Buddhist contexts to date, May 5, 2006
This review is from: Buddhism And Peace: Theory And Practice (Paperback)
Chanju Mun edited and published the articles, presented at the Seventh International Seminar on Buddhism and Leadership for Peace, co-sponsored by the Dae Won Sa Buddhist Temple of Hawaii and the Department of Philosophy, University of Hawaii - Manoa.

Of more than 40 articles, the editor selected and included the thirty-one excellent ones in this book. The articles cover Buddhism and peace from various Buddhist traditions. They are eminent scholars and activists across the world.

I strongly recommend prospective readers to read these excellent articles to build up a peaceful society in this problematic world filled with conflicts, violence, wars, and so forth.
