Excellent and detailed scholarship focused on Unitarian "non-missionary" American missionary to Japan, Clay MacCauley.
I only wished for a broader engagement with other issues, although Mohr convinced me of the central importance of "universality." He examined well the cross fertilization as well as retreat from engagement in encounters of Japanese Buddhist and Unitarian thinking. I hope he writes a more comprehensive survey of both Unitarian accomplishments and failures in the modernizing Japan of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as more about the context of progressive religious individuals and activities in the rest of Asia.
