When you meet the Buddha in the kitchen..., August 10, 2010
This review is from: Buddhist Peace Recipes (Roli Books) (Hardcover)
"Buddhist Peace Recipes" is a fascinating concept cookbook. It's a companion to Pushpesh Pant's
Hindu Soul Recipes. Just as Buddhism is more accessible than Hinduism, so are the recipes in this book are more accessible than "Hindu Soul Recipes." Pushpesh Pant draws on many Asian cuisines- there's Japanese tempura, Singaporean noodles, Indonesian satay, and Mongolian vegetables. Pushpesh renames the recipes in terms of Buddhist theology. Stir-fried mixed vegetables are named for the three jewels of the Buddha, the dharma (teaching) and sangha (community). Pad Thai is renamed for Maitri (friendship/empathy). The noodle salad is called "Nirvana in Shades of Green." The tofu soup is called "Rainbow Pot" (which sounds like a Bay Area medical cannabis place) Pushpesh Pant is poetic.
"Buddhist Peace Recipes" is easy cooking. MOST of the dishes get beautiful color pictures. The directions are easy. Pushpesh Pant manages to use his cookbook to convey Buddhist teaching. It is skillful means (upaya) on his part.
Great recipes-
Nishkam Shak (Hot&Sour Cabbage) Sort of a stir fried coleslaw, with a touch of vinegar.
Padmabha (Tofu&Green Beans in Red Curry Paste) Flavorful and filling.
Piyadassi Purnahara (Stir Fried Vegetables with Tofu) The sauce is an unusual combination of cumin, paprika, ginger, cayenne, sugar, nuts, lime juice, and honey.
Maitri-Raag- A simplified version of Pad Thai.
Agni- Szechuan style spicy tofu.
"Buddhist Peace Recipes" puts the cook at ease. May all cooks (and all beings) be happy.

If for no other reason, this book deserves a place on your shelf for the shear beauty. The recipes are delicious as well and fairly simple. Beautiful pictures and stories, educational as well as practical. This book has become a permanent resident on my cookbook shelf.
