There are 2-3 comics out before Jim Varney on this special, but they aren't funny at all. Varney steals the show as Cletus J Hocker in a comedy routine he does called "Cooking with Wine".

This was right before Varney played Ernest P Worrell for the first time and long before he played Jed Clampett in "The Beverly Hillbillies" movie and the voice of Slinky Dog in Toy Story and Toy Story 2. Varney is on the program for the last 4-5 minutes, but you can tell right away that he was destined for stardom.

A classic peace of television history. Makes me wish more of Varney's standup had been filmed, so we could enjoy it today.

I guess I should've found out more about the Comedy Shop, but I was disappointed that only five of the twenty-two minutes in this episode were dedicated to Rip Taylor. It's somewhat misleading to title an episode after a comedian when they occupy less than a fifth of the time slot.
