A Great Compilation, but too much material for the casual fan, April 9, 2009
This review is from: Buddy Holly Memorial Collection (3 CD Set) (Audio CD)
This is a great compilation of most of at least the less-obscure Buddy Holly songs. I really like it. However, being more of a casual fan than a hard core collector, it was almost a little too much material for me. The first disk contains three cuts from the original "Buddy and Bob" blue-grass-style group, which are mostly "interesting" for their novelty and historical value. The rest of the first disk contains primarily Buddy doing Elvis-style-knockoff songs that don't sound much like Buddy's later signature style. (Buddy admired Elvis, and many of Buddy's earlier songs tried to emulate Elvis.) From my personal viewpoint, the one truly classic Holly song on the first disk, "That'll Be the Day", could have been moved to the second disk, and the first disk eliminated. For a somewhat-serious collector this is a must-have. For someone looking for a Buddy Holley collection to listen to in their car while traveling, etc. there is maybe a little too much filler material. This consideration aside, many of the songs still sound fresh and original after 50 years. It would be a travesty to give this work by the legendary Buddy Holly anything less than 4 stars, even considering the filler material.

Easy, fun and perfectly natural, July 28, 2010
This review is from: Buddy Holly Memorial Collection (3 CD Set) (Audio CD)
Three C.D.s comprising sixty songs, BUDDY HOLLY MEMORIAL COLLECTION, adjusting for inflation, costs the same or maybe less than what I paid for my twenty-song Buddy Holly hits album thirty years ago. And that L.P. didn't come with the 30-page booklet this triple C.D. offers.
Outer-limits Buddy Holly fans may correct me, but I think BUDDY HOLLY MEMORIAL COLLECTION presents every popular recording the man made in his tragically short career. Six decades later, these songs you've heard your whole life hold up well; if "digitally remastered" means making 60-year old recordings sound good on C.D., I tip my hat to Erick Lobson, whom the package credits.
Please note that a few selections, such as "Peggy Sue Got Married," are just Buddy Holly on guitar instead of the full-blown band efforts you know from your vinyl Holly records. In other words, if a record company added to a Buddy Holly recording after his death, that version of the song is not here.
Then there's the BUDDY HOLLY MEMORIAL COLLECTION three-panel gatefold package & 30-page booklet. Music writer Bud Scoppa's essay gets into details such as what that percussion on "Everyday" really is and explains why Buddy Holly released some records eponymously and others as "the Crickets." Among 30-odd pictures, unfortunately only a couple are dated or have a caption. Last but not least, the package lists songwriting credits, recording dates and known personnel for each song.
If you are curious about Buddy Holly or don't have every song of his you want in your music library, I'd like to know if there is a better choice than BUDDY HOLLY MEMORIAL COLLECTION.
