5.0 out of 5 stars Doing justice to a superstar.
This cd is not the typical recreation of a biographical subject's style or sound. It seems to take Buddy's music one step beyond where he left it. It has the real feeling of live, extemporaneous sets with an energy that is is wonderfully authentic. What makes this even more interesting is the fact that Gary Busey sings lead and plays lead guitar, Charles Martin Smith...

3.0 out of 5 stars Stunner
I was less than thrilled by the film, which was downright boring at points, but the soundtrack is fantastic.

This band (Gary Busey, Charles Martin Smith and Don Stroud) doesn't imitate Buddy Holly's sound, at times they actually improve on it. "Rave On," "It's So Easy," and "Maybe Baby" give Holly's Rock'n'Roll sides a run for their money...

This cd is not the typical recreation of a biographical subject's style or sound. It seems to take Buddy's music one step beyond where he left it. It has the real feeling of live, extemporaneous sets with an energy that is is wonderfully authentic. What makes this even more interesting is the fact that Gary Busey sings lead and plays lead guitar, Charles Martin Smith plays base and the Don Stroud plays drums. Although other film biographies have had the actors attempting to play the music, none are as musically successful as this. This is truly a unique and wonderful extension of the Buddy Holly experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gary Busey creating the right atmosphere for the movie, February 26, 1999

This soundtrack came from a less than perfect biography of Buddy Holly's life which for unspecified reasons did not refer to the Crickets and miss-stated or glossed over a number of important people and facts.

However, despite this, Gary Busey's efforts in The Buddy Holly Story are to be praised. It is amazing that he sings and plays all of Buddy's songs himself - and does a pretty good job of getting the feel of the music and creating the right atmosphere. This is the value of this CD, one of the very few occasions that anybody has captured that feel sufficiently well enough to encourage the listener to want to know more about the man and his music.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good as they get!........, February 25, 2002
This review is from: The Buddy Holly Story: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I believe the trailer for this movie stated "it will have you laughing, crying, dancing in the aisles!" Or something to that effect. Well it did just that to me! And to be honest the soundtrack is better than the movie! Holly may not have even come close to sounding like this live, but you'll think he did!You will HOPE he did! The guys (Busey,Smith,Stroud) Bring life to the music. Stand outs include: That'll be the day, Rave on, Oh boy! and others. If your a Holly fan you WILL enjoy it! If your a REAL rock and roll fan you'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous versions of Holly's music, December 26, 2009
This review is from: The Buddy Holly Story: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I have to give Gary Busey and the other gentleman who performed for this movie tremendous credit. The songs here ROCK, pure and simple. I've never been an immense fan of Buddy Holly's music (he was around well before my time and the relatively poor sound quality of his recordings without remastering make listening less than enjoyable). But they come alive with this re-recording, and now I see what all the fuss was about. This is driving, but true-to-the-original music, probably close to what one would have heard had they been lucky enough to see Holly himself play live. I consider this an essential CD to a true rock & roll fan's collection. This needs to be re-released. Discontinuing this on the manufacturer's part is a foolish move. The movie will play on cable for years to come, and new fans will want the album (as I do), and not be able to get it. Shame on them. I'd give it ten stars, if I could.

Other tunes, particularly "True Love Ways" and "I'm Gonna Love You Too" don't quite make the mark. Busey's voice works on the uptempo stuff, but he has trouble on the ballads.

"Maybe Baby" is so good here it gives me chills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding on Vinyl, March 5, 2008
This review is from: The Buddy Holly Story: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I'm lucky enouch to own a vinyl copy of this, which I'd strongly recommend. The #s are packed with energy in respectable tribute to the spirit of the legendary Holly. I'm not sure if the CD measures up to the fiesty 50s flare that long lost vinyl is able to reincarnate. Long live Buddy, wherever he may be!
