Book Description

May 1, 2002
Buddy is blind—the victim of animal abuse. The violent encounter has left the poor dog homeless, scared, and alone. Trapped inside the dark labyrinth of his own mind, the mongrel has led a bleak existence—until a chance meeting with the Jack. The Jack, a fearless Jack Russell terrier, befriends the sightless Buddy and bravely leads him on a perilous quest for a land called home. An engrossing and often lyrical novel, Buddy & the Jack pays tribute to classic animal tales such as Watership Down and The Call of the Wild. It is a story of friendship, loyalty, and the most unlikely of heroes.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Buddy and the Jack was born from a news story broadcast on a tabloid news show several years ago. Two strays -- a hairy mongrel and a Jack Russell terrier -- were found on the streets of an anonymous midwestern city, the mongrel clinging to the JRT's scruff. A closer examination of the mongrel revealed he had been the victim of abuse resulting in the loss of both his eyes. Totally blind, the mongrel had some how met up with the JRT and together, they were surviving on the streets. The piece was only a few minutes long, but it had a profound effect on me. I knew there was a good story there and I was determined to write it. The result was Buddy and the Jack. I had always been a fan of Richard Adams, particularly Watership Down and The Plague Dogs. My writing has been greatly influenced by his work. I hope Buddy and the Jack pays an apt homage to his novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book, June 1, 2002

This review is from: Buddy & the Jack: A Novel (Paperback)
Buddy & The Jack is a story about a blind dog and a Jack Russell terrier who helps him. The Jack becomes Buddy's eyes and leads him on a journey through all types of perils. It is an emotional novel that will have you laughing one moment and crying the next. It's not just a dog story; there are subplots involving human characters, too. The book is well written and the characters are very real. I had at one time lost a dog that was dear to my heart and can relate to certain situations in the book that are handled very sensitively. I would recommend this book to anyone who is an animal lover, it will touch your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life affirming, November 11, 2006

I read this story while my 14 year old Black lab (Mabel) was dying. From the first page to the last I was an emotional wreck. And, as final chapters do, this marvelous adventure sadly comes to a close. However, the ending also offers an element of hope and the dream of reunion. If you love animals, particularly dogs, this is a wonderful story beautifully told. The author has stated that he hoped his book would do justice to the art of Richard Adams, author of "Watership Down" and "The Plague Dogs." I think it fair to say that Mr. Adams would warmly welcome Mr. Smith's story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story!, February 19, 2003

(REAL NAME)
Buddy and the Jack by W. Bryan Smith made me laugh, made me cry, and kept me reading until I couldn't read anymore--a true page turner for me. What I enjoyed the most about this novel is the warm relationship between Buddy and the Jack, and how they survived not only in the streets but against the ferals. I also enjoyed the human romance, which honestly, had me laughing here and there, and the way they got involved with Buddy and the Jack. This is definitely going to be one of those novels I'll be reading again.
