3.0 out of 5 stars Knox rocks! / Bowen doesn't!, August 8, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Buddy Knox / Buddy Knox & Jimmy Bowen (Audio CD)
I was a big Buddy Knox fan as a teen in the late 50s. As far as Jimmy Bowen is concerned I had a copy of his "Warm Up To Me Baby" (which is not included on this CD) but didn't really recall any other of his recordings.

All the big Buddy Knox hits are included. One notable that is lacking is Buddy's "Whenever I'm Lonely" which is one of my favorites. For some reason Jimmy Bowen recorded a very mediocre version of the song which is on his section of the CD. I'm not sure there was any reason for Buddy to remake "Mary Lou" & "Maybelline" since they were far better done by the original artists, Ronnie Hawkins & Chuck Berry. But overall, considering all the Knox classics included, it's a nice collection.

Jimmy Bowen's offerings were in my opinion fair to poor. I really couldn't get into any of his songs. His hit recording of "By The Light Of the Silvery Moon" is nothing to write home about and his version of "Blue Moon" is just annoying. Why he decided to make his own version of Knox's "Whenever I'm Lonely" is a mystery. While I'm sure that Jimmy can pick a guitar with the best of them he just doesn't have the voice to carry any of these tunes. Fortunately he later found his nitch as a successful record producer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good But Not Quite As Good As The Sequel Volume From The U.K., April 27, 2011
By
AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Buddy Knox / Buddy Knox & Jimmy Bowen (Audio CD)
If you're searching about for a good compilation of the hit tunes registered by Buddy Knox (guitar and vocals - born in Happy, Texas on July 20, 1933). Jimmy Bowen (bass and vocals - born on November 30, 1937 in Santa Rita, New Mexico) & The Rhythm Orchids (Don Lanier, guitar and drummer Dave Aldred, who would later become a member of Dicky Doo & The Don'ts), this one from Collectables isn't a bad choice. It has excellent sound reproduction, 3 pages of background notes by Mark Marymont, and the original notes that appeared on the Roulette vinyl LPs depicted on the cover.

However, for just a few dollars more you can still get quality copies of the 2-CD set from Sequel of the U.K. which provides both sides to all 10 hit singles they had for Roulette from 1957 to 1959 (showing the same arm-wrestling picture shown on the cover of this volume). This one omits Swingin' Daddy, a # 80 Billboard Pop Top 100 in early 1958 on Roulette 4042 but does include the uncharted B-side, Whenever I'm Lonely, both billed as Buddy Knox with The Rhythm Orchids. Also omitted are the Jimmy Bowen hits I'm Stickin' With You, a # 9 R&B/# 14 Top 100 in March 1957, its flipside, Ever Lovin' Fingers, a # 63 Top 100, on Roulette 4001, and Warm Up To Me Baby, a # 57 Top 100 in June 1957 and its B-side, I Trusted You on Roulette 4010 - each billed as Jimmy Bowen with The Rhythm Orchids.

Party Doll was first released in 1956 on their own label, Triple-D 798 billed as Buddy Knox with The Rhythm Orchids with the B-side being Bowen's I'm Stickin' With You. With limited funds for promotion/distribution, it was then leased to Blue Moon 402, before being gobbled up by the much larger Roulette Records, who then split the two sides into separate and simultaneous releases, the above-mentioned Bowen side on Roulette 4001, and Party Doll, now with My Baby's Gone as the flip (not in this volume) on Roulette 4002.

And although it was quickly made clear that Buddy was the more talented vocalist of the two, as Party Doll shot to # 1 Top 100 and # 3 R&B, Roulette nevertheless did the same thing with the next two releases, Warm Up To Me Baby by Jimmy as noted above, and Rock Your Little Baby To Sleep, this time billed as Lieutenant Buddy Knox with The Rhythm Orchids on Roulette 4009 (as he was now serving in the military), and it finished at # 17 Top 100 b/w Don't Make Me Cry.

There would be other singles billed to Jimmy, but he wouldn't have a charter again until the summer of 1958. Buddy, meanwhile, had Hula Love (also featured in the 1957 film Jamboree) go to # 9 Top 100 and # 13 R&B in October 1957 b/w Devil Woman, and in March 1958 saw Swingin' Daddy top out at # 80 Top 100 b/w Whenever I'm Lonely on Roulette 4042. All this time there had been simultaneous releases for Buddy and Jimmy taking turns fronting the band, and in August 1958 Bowen's By The Light Of The Silvery Moon made it to #50 Top 100 b/w The Two Step on Roulette 4083 (his last charter) while Buddy's cover of the 1954 Ruth Brown offering on Atlantic, Somebody Touched Me, got to # 22 Hot 100 b/w C'mon Baby on Roulette 4082.

January 1959 saw Buddy release two sides billed only under his name, with Teasable, Pleasable You reaching # 85 Top 100 b/w That's Why I Cry, a # 88 Top 100 itself, on Roulette 4120, and in May, I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself made it to # 55 Top 100 b/w To Be With You on Roulette 4140 (neither side in this volume).

After leaving Roulette and signing with Liberty, Buddy returned to the charts with Lovey Dovey, a tune first done by The Clovers in 1954, a # 25 Hot 100 in January 1961 b/w I Got You, followed in April by Ling Ting Tong, a 1954/55 hit by both The Charms and The Five Keys, which Buddy took to # 65 Hot 100 b/w The Kisses (They're All Mine). Those sides remain hard to find.

Buddy passed away from cancer on Valentine's Day 1999.
