I'm amazed at the amount of useful information in this book. Using this text I was able to develop a working budget for my department and the budget for two small projects. This is a very good text for managers of small departments. It provides usable information and it concise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very practical guide, December 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Budgeting for Managers (Paperback)
I purchased this book as required text for a graduate school class, but it is written at the easy undergraduate level. I have done budgets formally for 7 years in my work, and found the discussions/tips to be surprisingly specific, accurate, and helpful. I would expect it to be particularly helpful to a new manager, because it assists you in setting up an organized way of approaching the task which will pay dividends many times over in future quarters/years. Better to get things set up correctly from the beginning than to do it haphazardly and then have to start over a year later.

It also covers the politics and gamesmanship that you occasionally see in some organizations, and common traps and mistakes that can be avoided, including some from using computer spreadsheets. For a few bucks, a few hours of reading, and a few hours of advance planning before you get started, this can help you avoid a lot of frustration and give you a running start.

This briefcase book offers a concise review of how to create, negotiate, present and track a budget. In particular, the 'smart managing' tips are practical and useful for producing budget. As a computer professional, I find the stuff helpful for project management.
