5.0 out of 5 stars Budos Erupts...
I don't know where to begin when trying to describe the Budos Band...they have hints of afrobeat, funk, jazz, and a troop of horns that will rattle your walls. (Not that you'd notice because the bass will have your floor vibrating.) I have listened to this CD constantly since first getting it. From the opening bass line of "Up From The South" I was hooked. 3.0 out of 5 stars Kung-Fu Soul Brother BGM
First the good: They have almost perfectly nailed the late 1960s - early 1970s funk/jazz fusion sound with bass, guitar, eclectic percussion, big horns with a bright spacious reverb that reminds me of classic Stax sessions, and basic old-school mixing techniques. Sounds like it could be background music from an old Blaxploitation movie.

Now the bad: I love...

I have purchased CD's by nearly every artist on the Daptone label and you really can't go wrong with any of them, but Budos definitely stand out. If you are a fan of funk or afrobeat, the Budos Band will hit the spot. I had the pleasure of seeing them live recently, and the grooves are twice as powerful when they are vibrating in your belly. If you want to funk your way through life, don't hesitate, just pick this disc up.

Um. Wow. The first thing I had heard about this album was a joking comment that it is a funk band from New York and that the Wu Tang would be sampling tracks from this album almost instantly. This piqued my interest because I DO love Rza's production and I DO see where they're coming from by saying that.

This album has some of the sweetest grooves I've heard in quite a while. It's funky and sounds like it could be an amazing instrumental set up for a hip hop album, and is just an amazing headphone masterpiece.

I bought the CD YESTERDAY and I've already had 3 people who heard it in passing ask me WHO IS THAT?!?! so it seems to also fit a diverse section of the music market, and it's just friggin good. Buy it.

Now the bad: I love this kind of groove/funk/soul stuff, and I wanted to give it five stars like everybody else... but ... This album sounds like background music from an old Blaxploitation movie. Emphasis on the word BACKGROUND. Track after track, the Budos Band lays down a really sweet-sounding bed and then does nothing with it. Each song is built around a basic musical phrase. After you hear the repeated phrase a couple of times, you start thinking "okay, now do something with it." You want to hear a solo or a melodic change or a drum break or something, but the band never adds any punctuation and the song ends up being an underscore that never quite pays off.

To be fair, not all the songs are like this. There are 4 tracks I liked, but 4 out of 11 is less than 50%.

And then there's the organ. I find no fault with Mike Deller's playing; he did the best he could with what he had. It's just that the organ itself sounds like crap. It's a thin, wimpy synth imitation of a Hammond (I myself have long suffered the heartbreak of playing an inadequate organ synth; it's hard to find one that sounds good these days.) Compounding the organ's inherent deficiency is the fact that apparently it was plugged straight into the board, because it has no reverb and sounds almost like it came from somewhere else .. floating on top of the mix and just not belonging there. It was heart-breaking to hear that cheesy organ slapped down on top of the big, ballsy horn section. Just didn't work for me. Thankfully the organ was not prominent on most tracks on the album.

Still, for the price this is a pretty okay album. I've heard a lot worse. I just feel like the Budos Band could do a lot better ... In fact, I know they do, because i also got Budos II, which I more highly recommend.

What a phenomenal album this is. I found them after hearing one of their tracks on an episode of Entourage, and I haven't stopped playing this album since. Perfect summertime soundtrack music for a bbq, or if you just feel like tapping your feet, bobbing your head and being in a good mood. It's funky, soulful, jazzy, almost latin at times, and super catchy throughout. No need to skip any tracks here, these guys are awesome.

It's like the "Ocean's Eleven" soundrack, but without George Clooney talking over everything! A great mix of funk and jazz with some absolutely outstanding grooves. I have to agree wholeheartedly with the above reviewer -- this is just begging to be sampled. Very well-produced.

"T.I.B.W.F" is quite possibly the coolest song I have ever heard. Now if I just knew what it stood for...

If you are new to Budos don't start here. "II" and "III" are better in so many ways. "Dig" though, is
still a competent album and for existing fans a must-have to see the road they have travelled.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat of a Sameness, March 7, 2009
This review is from: The Budos Band (Audio CD)
While I was shopping recently in a favorite San Diego music store, the clerk put on some great funky horn-driven music that reminded me of a couple of the great Bay Area bands of the late sixties and early seventies like Tower of Power and Cold Blood. That turned out to be The Budos Band, specifically their second album. But a big difference between this and the older bands I mentioned is that this music is all instrumental. So since I found nothing else to buy that day, I picked up both of The Budos Band albums and eagerly slipped them into my CD player.
As it turns out, Budos Band II is better than the eponymous debut. Yes, this is solid and competent, but there is a sameness to it that eventually wears on you. I was expecting great things after the stirring opener with its tight syncopation. Instead, the album kind of lost steam and segued into largely indifferent but energetic background music.
I cannot point out much that stands out after Up From the South, perhaps the ponderously-named Aynotchesh Yererfu comes closest. The rousing Eastbound showed promise, but it is far too repetitious. One cut, Sing A Simple Song sounds like a cross between David Bowie's Fame and the Average White Band!
I recommend to those who do not yet own any Budos Band CDs that they buy the second one. Its no doubt superior to the debut.
