3.0 out of 5 stars No se compara con 'Aquí'

This review is from: Bueninvento (Audio CD)
This is one of our areas exports to the music world. Julieta Venegas lived in Tijuana and at one time worked at the Wherehouse in the Southbay area. She is a local success story. All lyrics and included booklet are in Spanish but the emotions she evokes are universal. This is Julieta's second effort and it does not disappoint. This is a departure CD as she is further exploring her path. One of a number of many talented young female voices, Venegas seems to provide her fans with something different. It is not so much her voice but probably her style. She sings in a staccato, rapid fire style that fluctuates to various highs and lows. The strength is in her phrasing, which is mesmerizing, catchy and borders on rap, teasing seductively but never crossing over to the other genre. Her vocal range is wide and she doesn't exceed her limits. The songs included on her sophmore effort are personal testaments to loves lost and the cycle involved in hopes of and finding a new one.Void of heavy messages that often abound in Rock en Espanol, the formaula is simple, drawing on the universal theme of love and all the complexities it involves. Venegas is accompamied by a good group of musicians although her solo work is not as evident as on her first effort, "Aqui". This gives the CD a different sound as she ventures further into new territories giving this a more "cutting edge" sound. The guitars and keyboards wail, whine and drop out, all the while Venegas machine guns her vocals. On certain numbers she performs on piano but only briefly. She is featured on accordian quite a few times and the reult is very good as she displays her talents in a fine blending of tradition ala 21st century. The CD hinges on techno flavored tunes but the glue that holds all the experiments together are her Gatlin gun vocals that fire at you in staccato fashion. Some favorites include the title track, "Bueninvento" which includes some nice violin, "Voluntad" which has a wonderful arrangement that features underlying tones, "Abandonada" features her accordian work that is tangoesque and played in the style she sings, "Salvavidas" has a quirky sound that has a dark underside that contrasts beautifully with the upbeat song as Julieta takes you on a trip that is like a roller coaster, complete with dips and unexpected turns. All in all this is a very good CD as Julieta anounces that if you're going with her get ready to explore some new musical grounds. It should be a fun ride as she has some great musical sensibilites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transcendent!, July 20, 2002
This review is from: Bueninvento (Audio CD)
If you need proof that music is universal - that it transcends race, culture, and language - listen to Julietta Venegas. I usually only review books on Amazon, but I HAD to help get the word out about a singer America needs to discover.

As Alanis is to Canada, Bjork is to Iceland, and Gwen Stefani is to SoCal, Ofra Haza was to the Middle East and Kate Bush is for England - so Julietta is to Mexico. Strong, talented, ENERGETIC and auto-replay worthy. As a native english speaker, I was surprised to find that this CD spoke to me louder than any other this year. The emotion that Julieta projects is all that's needed to get her message, and soon you'll forget that she's singing in spanish - and you'll be proud to say you dig the accordion. SERIOUSLY.
I guarantee - if you like any of the singers listed above, buy Bueninvento and you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Julieta Venegas en todo su esplendor, September 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Bueninvento (Audio CD)
Viva Chile! Feliz 18 Chile!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Invention Indeed!, September 12, 2000

This album is perhaps one of the most crossover-friendly Latin alternative records to date. Check out the press feedback:

"Bueninvento is an indispensable collection, showcasing a lightness of spirit and sense of humor - precisely what the field needs....Julieta Venegas emerges as one of the most creative voices in Latin music, with a set of songs that combine the offbeat sensibility of alternative rock with the melodic flair of commercial pop...[Bueninvento] is a work of art." - Ernesto Lechner, Los Angeles Times, 9/3/00

"Julieta Venegas' songs have the clear melodies and emotional impact that could make listeners sing along before they worry about the words." - Jon Pareles, New York Times, 8/17/00

"Bueninvento, the long-awaited sophomore album by Mexico City singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas, is as unfalteringly good and inventive as the title suggests. Her intentions are clear on 'Enero y Abril' as she hums a soulful, five-note chorus that needs no translation, speaking directly to the heart. Buen invento indeed!" - Enrique Lavin, CMJ New Music Report, 8/7/00

4.0 out of 5 stars La voz, su instrumento, la guitarra su accesorio, October 25, 2001
This review is from: Bueninvento (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and very refreshing!!!, September 19, 2001
This review is from: Bueninvento (Audio CD)
I love this cd. The way she mixes different generes into her own sound comes out great. Her techno rock version of Juan Gab's "siempre en mi mente" is just outstanding as are "otro sol","fe","enero y abril","salvavidas" and the potential hit "sueño de sombras". Because of her unique style you must listen to each song in it's entirety for there are many mood changes and hidden surprises in each tune. You get 14 tracks with not 1 throw-on which is one of my pet peeves, so that is another +.
This ranges to some dark pieces to some uplifting "feel good" parts, to some sexy, sentimental journeys...she does not have a superior voice, rather she keeps it simple, and the lyrics are fairly simple, although she does get deeper than most. She also is an excellent accordian player, she is the first I've heard to incorparate the accordian with rock, pop, techno,r&b.
I see no reason not to purchase this one immediatly.

This is a strong CD - great from start to finish

The songs are unique and the album moves.

I still don't know Spanish, but this is one album that makes me wish I did..

It's evident fromt this CD that julieta is a very inventive artist - she has a sense for pop, but her music has substance.

I'm anticipating her next release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Alternative Music, October 14, 2002
By
This review is from: Bueninvento (Audio CD)
Today, the "alternative" is used to describe much of today's music. But most of the music that is promoted as being alternative is just pop, bands that have tunes that may sound a bit "dark", or "deep", but in the end are just failing attempst to produce original material. Venegas, however, has the purest type of alternative aproach to music. A totaly original usege of materials (texture/instrumentation/arrangments), and lyrical relevance (music that supports the words). With amazing craft and production, Bueninvento is a collection of vanguard, inovating songs. You will like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow, March 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Bueninvento (Audio CD)
i ran across julieta venegas in a magazine article, and after sampling some songs from our favorite music-swapping utility, i knew immediately i needed more. so i bought both bueninveto and her debut, aquí.

and what can i say? bueninveto is a great album. more cutting-edge musically than aquí -- more guitar and less piano -- yet very approachable and extremely catchy. me lo ecanata!! favorite tracks include: "fe", "hoy no quiero", "voluntad" and "flor", pero todos los canciónes son muy fuerte.

and gringos fear not: if you don't speak spanish, you'll find youreself singing along nonetheless. a truly wonderful album.
