Book Description

November 2002
This book is a photographic essay on Buenos Aires which describes the city in which people lead their lives. The author tries to understand what makes this city unique and how it parallels other megacities. The work borrows heavily from urbanism and architecture and, to a lesser extent, from sociology and history.

The book’s chapters are Landscapes, Dwellings, Containers, Spaces, Flows, Nature and Suburbia. Clorindo Testa, an architect based in Buenos Aires, drew the foreword. Full Spanish and English text.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I liked the book a lot. It captures many intimate aspects of the city, just as I recall them. -- Cesar Pelli, New Haven

Is the book that best explains the grand urban stage of Buenos Aires. The photos and texts are extraordinarily effective. -- Oriol Bohigas, Barcelona

The idea that the city consists of flows and containers is difficult to express, yet Sebastian's images achieve so. -- Alberto Varas, Museum of Fine Arts, November 2002

The well-travelled, young author shows the real city, not necessarily the picturesque. -- Micaela Meyer, Buenos Aires Herald, February 16, 2003

This lovely book travelled from desk to desk and we were all very impressed with the images and the city. -- OMA / Rem Koolhaas, Rotterdam

This notable photography book is proof of the author's exceptional urban sensibility. -- Graciela Melgarejo, La Nacion, January 15, 2003

From the Author

This book was born in 1999. That year I was fortunate to travel on many occasions to Asia, where I got to know cities as varied as Hong Kong, Singapore and Manila. Overwhelmed, surprised and filled with admiration by what I discovered, I became interested in seeing Buenos Aires with new eyes. I wanted to describe my Buenos Aires, from the perspective of a city-dweller that uses the sidewalks, commutes by train every morning, goes to the park with the kids on weekends.

The book was born with a premise: that the city is beautiful and interesting. I confirmed both impressions and believe Buenos Aires is a great place to live in. It is much more than an European city on Río de la Plata, the classic description. In addition to its development during the "belle époque", that period between 1880 and 1930, Buenos Aires participated actively in the most significant urban processes of the XXth century: the "ville radieuse", American-style suburbanization, the recycling of harbors.

Traveling is a matter of attitude; of looking and perceiving as a traveler, of having a curious mind. I like a quote from René Magritte, the surrealist painter, who said, "There is a sensibility I refer to as the tourists' sensibility. They travel far looking for poetry, and the poetry they find is the familiar one. However, in the familiar one can discover the unknown poetry." This book tries to do the latter.

I enjoyed tremendously preparing this book. For two years I worked on it every single day--with no exception. Some days I just thought, others I read, wrote or took photos. I traveled a lot--on short trips, but trips nonetheless--and was immensely rewarded for all these efforts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buenos Aires revealed in a great book!, April 29, 2003
By

This review is from: Buenos Aires: El Escenario Urbano (Spanish/English Bilingual Edition) (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
If you like - or think you might like - Buenos Aires, then this is a book worth having. As opposed to the typical great picture approach that makes every place look like paradise, the author's photographs reflect the city as it really is, balancing the typical beautiful views with others that depict every day life and even less pleasant ones that also form part of every city.

At the same time, the author explains in very ammenable text, how and why Buenos Aires got to be what it is, thoroughly analyzing in each chapter a different component of the city's life.

This beautifully assembled combination of text and pictures conveys a very truthfull and wholesome idea of Buenos Aires.

Worth buying and keeping!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but English text comes as addendum at the end, February 21, 2006
This review is from: Buenos Aires: El Escenario Urbano (Spanish/English Bilingual Edition) (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
We bought this book as a gift to an English-only speaker, but to our regret, we are returning it, because the English part of the book comes as an addendum at the end of the book. It would be great if it is published with Spanish and English side by side.

Once again, Mr. Letemendia produces a powerful book which immediately pulls the reader in. The photographs are outstanding! They represent not only the beauty of the city, but also a feeling for how people live in the city. In addition to being an exceptional photographer, Mr. Letemendia is also a talented writer. His portrayal of the city's history and development give the reader an understanding of and appreciation for the complexity of Buenos Aires. I have never been to Buenos Aires yet now I feel I know it. The book is a great enticement to visit Buenos Aires. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!
